Olivia Rodrigo Is Our 21st Century Pop Princess

Olivia Rodrigo Is Our 21st Century Pop Princess

We’re all on the same page about Olivia Rodrigo being one of our generation’s best artists, right? Okay, good, just checking!

To say Olivia Rodrigo has had a whirlwind of a year would be a massive understatement. She’s gone from a Disney star to one of the biggest pop stars in the world, almost overnight. She’s completely blown everyone away with the unprecedented success of her debut album Sour. Sour has officially gone to number one on the Billboard 200 chart, scoring the biggest opening week of 2021. After the first week, Sour has become RIAA certified gold! amongst all this success of the record, she’s also secured a number one song with ‘good 4 u.’ There is no stopping Olivia Rodrigo at this point. She’s on a roller coaster that only goes up.

To celebrate this massive accomplishment, we thought it was time to break down our top five favorite tracks on Sour. Yes, narrowing it down was borderline impossible.

‘brutal’

There was simply no way we were about to talk about this album and not mention this masterpiece. If teenage angst were a song, you wouldn’t have to look any further than ‘brutal.’ Even though we’ve listened to this song about a million times at this point, we are still nowhere near over the line “where’s my f*cking teenage dream.” Katy Perry painted a reality we simply are not living.

We’re so happy that teens today get to grow up with this song to connect to these formative years.

‘happier’

“I hope you’re happy, but don’t be happier” is the most heartbreaking line we’ve ever heard. It’s such a plea to love lost, and you don’t think you could bear to see that person as happy as they seemed to be with you. We drew many connections to a song bearing the same title, ‘happier’ by Ed Sheeran. Both tracks are just punches to the gut. You’ll find us crying to this Olivia Rodrigo heartbreak anthem almost nightly.

‘traitor’

Come on, the lyrical content of this track is unmatched. After hearing ‘traitor’ for the first time, we knew we had to put Olivia Rodrigo in a class of songwriters with the best of the best. “Guess you didn’t cheat, but you’re still a traitor” is such an overwhelming line. Anyone who’s ever been in a situation where the other person takes advantage of feelings and won’t label things just so they can treat you like shit will relate.

We hope whoever this track is about listened and learned.

‘good 4 u’

We can’t get enough of this smash hit. ‘good 4 u’ is the absolute best track to scream the lyrics while dancing around. We’ll have this track on repeat all summer long, as we all should! It’s truly an anthem and one of the best examples of genuinely good modern-day pop music you can find in mainstream media.

‘1 step forward, 3 steps back’

Obviously, we’re going to include the song that samples’ New Year’s Day’ by the queen herself, Taylor Swift. This song is so beautiful and soft, and it’s certainly a stand-out from the record. We think this would be the perfect closer at Olivia Rodrigo’s future tour. It has this full-circle feeling to it.
