TXT officially made their comeback, opening a whole new chapter not only in their discography but also in their career. The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE is their second album and not only is it a no skip album, but the title track: ‘0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You)’ is literally perfection.
We had expectations for this Tomorrow X Together comeback and they kept exceeding them with every teaser. And still, we clearly weren’t ready for this new era.
‘0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You)’
It’s small to say that the title track for this TXT comeback sums up everything that’s amazing in music. ‘0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You)’ sets itself apart from not only every other TXT song but also every other K-Pop release. The pop-rock song mixes perfectly the complicated feelings of first love: youth, nostalgia, desperation, and yet hope. In a world of chaos, they can find something that makes sense and that they’re sure of, which is their love. The production of the track is absolutely incredible making this song such an addictive pop-rock anthem. Something that needs to be highlighted is Taehyun’s voice all throughout the track, the raspiness of his vocals puts the whole song together. And what makes that element even better is how much it contrasts with Seori’s soft and sweet, yet emotional, voice.
There’s no better way to explain this song than to say this is the perfect song.
And when you think it can’t possibly get any better, you have the music video. They managed to bring to life through images the complex feeling of the song. It follows Yeonjun who leaves his house with his friends for a road trip. Yet, it has a plot twist which of course we will not give away because it’s something you need to watch for yourself. But between the perfection that is the song and the photography and storytelling in the music video… Chills. Just chills.
The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE
Yes, ‘0X1 = LOVESONG (I Know I Love You)’ is the star of the show and arguably TXT‘s best song ever. But let’s not forget about the b-sides because they’re also incredible.
The album opens up with what feels like the opposite to the title track: ‘Anti-Romantic’ is a much slower and darker song. While in ‘0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You)’ there’s this kind of hope and appreciation for love; as its name indicates it, ‘Anti-Romantic’ is the feeling of giving up on love. While the title track sets love as their only stable, ‘Anti-Romantic’ sets love as this overrated thing that they don’t quite understand and they’re against. The way both songs are so different with the message and the style truly shows how good TXT are as vocalists and artists when it comes to expressing these very different types of feelings.
Parting away (a bit) from the angst, ‘Magic’ and ‘No Rules’ are fun and groovy tracks. ‘Magic’ is a song fully in English about healing and regaining hope through love. Yeonjun, Huening Kai, Beomgyu, and Taehyun participated in the making of ‘No Rules,’ a track about the routine and limits of life as idols. And while ‘Ice Cream’ and ‘What if i had been that PUMA’ do sound like a lot of fun, the lyrics contrast a lot with the production and happy vibes they give out. ‘What if i had been that PUMA’ (written by Yeonjun, Taehyun, and Beomgyu) is more about the struggles and confusion that one can face. ‘Ice Cream,’ which is a track Soobin worked on, does sound fun and joyful but the lyrics come from a very pessimistic place. The lyrics place the imagery of the ice cream as something that melts away, that fades away, and they compare it to their dreams. They wish sadness on others because they can’t seem to find happiness all while singing “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.”
‘Dear Sputnik’ is a song composed by Taehyun and produced by Huening Kai and they both wrote the lyrics as well. It follows the same vibes as the title track with a pop-rock feeling to it, yet it’s much happier and feels more grandiose, like an anthem. And to close off the album, ‘Frost’ is the embodiment of TXT‘s concept in this comeback, with imageries of chaos and being frozen. It’s very different from everything. And what makes it so unique apart from this hip-hop/pop production that isn’t found on the other songs of the album, is for sure the vocal effects they add to their singing making the song have so many layers to it.
To say that TXT exceeded our expectations is an understatement. With an incredible title track and b-sides that complement it so perfectly on which the members participated, this can’t be qualified as something else than the perfect comeback. They’re already breaking records and taking over the world with The Chaos Chapter: FREEZE. And made it impossible for anyone to deny that they’re indeed one of the leaders of the 4th generation.
