All the way back in 1996, there was a movie called Space Jam. In case you somehow missed this cultural landmark, it’s a movie about basketball legend Michael Jordan teaming up with the Looney Tunes (yeah, you read that right) to stop aliens from making the beloved cartoon characters the main attraction in their theme park. Yes, the movie was a lot, but it’s so much fun to watch! And now, almost 30 years later, we have a Space Jam sequel coming. This time, the star player starring in it, along with Bugs Bunny, is LeBron James.
The plot of Space Jam: A New Legacy includes LeBron James’ son being kidnapped by an evil algorithm, and the only way to get him back is to beat a team of insanely talented digital basketball champions. This leads to LeBron and the Looney Tunes teaming up and, if the trailer is any indication, it’ll be a pretty epic game even if you don’t like basketball. In case you didn’t catch on yet, we’re super excited to see this movie on July 16.
“What’s Up, Doc?” This Cast Is!
Joining LeBron James in the live-action cast is Don Cheadle as the villain Al-G Rhythm, plus Alex Huerta as a younger version of LeBron, Sonequa Martin-Green as LeBron’s wife Kamiyah James, and Cedric Joe as Dom, Ceyair J. Wright as Darius, and Harper Leigh Alexander as Xosha, LeBron’s children.
The voice cast of this Space Jam sequel, who are set to bring the Looney Tunes to life is Jeff Bergman as Bugs Bunny, Sylvester, and Foghorn Leghorn, Eric Bauza as Daffy Duck, and Marvin the Martian (both of which have been voicing the characters for a while now), the queen Zendaya as Lola Bunny (as if we needed more reasons to love the character), Bob Bergen as Porky Pig and Tweety, Jim Cummings as Tasmanian Devil, Gabriel Iglesias as Speedy Gonzales, and Candi Milo as Granny. The movie also brings Ernie Johnson Jr. as the Commentator for the game.
An Awesome Crew For An Awesome Movie
Space Jam: A New Legacy has a screenplay by Juel Taylor, Tony Rettenmaier, Keenan Coogler, Terence Nance, Jesse Gordon, and Celeste Ballard. It’s directed by Malcolm D. Lee and produced by Ryan Coogler, LeBron James, Maverick Carter, and Duncan Henderson. Stellar crew, no doubt this will be an awesome movie!
Finally, no film is ever complete without its soundtrack. And, like the original, this Space Jam will also have a great soundtrack! If you were paying close attention to the trailer above, you probably caught two songs from the soundtrack that will be in all our playlists very soon: Lil Uzi Vert’s ‘Pump Up The Jam’ and Cordae & Duckwrth’s collaboration ‘Settle The Score.’ The movie may be set to release in theatres on July 16, but the soundtrack will drop five days earlier, on July 9. We just know we’ll be walking into theatres knowing all the songs by heart.
There’s no doubt in our minds that Space Jam: A New Legacy will become as loved as the original, and we can’t wait for it to be available. Come chat with us about your thoughts on this new movie on Twitter @TheHoneyPOP, or find us on Instagram and Facebook!
