We, at THP, recognize that Carrie Underwood is the Queen of Country. Since winning Season 4 of American Idol, Carrie has conquered the charts over the course of eight studio albums. With a discography full of modern-day classics, we know it might be difficult to know just where to begin. So, we carefully cultivated a list of seven Carrie Underwood songs for your playlist. These are our personal faves and we know you’ll love them, too!
We have seen Carrie Underwood be powerful, sorrowful, and playful. But, until this moment, we have never seen her be sultry. ‘Drinking Alone’ is the fourth and final single from Cry Pretty, her sixth studio album. While it sounds like a bluesy, slow jam for the fall, it’s also the anthem for you and your summer boo!
‘Jesus, Take The Wheel’
Carrie Underwood’s official first single from her debut album, Some Hearts, is a classic country storytelling ballad. ‘Jesus, Take The Wheel’ tells the tale of a mother who has surpassed the point of exhaustion. She was driving her baby home when she lost control of the car. However, she relied on her faith to make it to safety. While only at the beginning of her career, Carrie was already taking cues from the legends in her genre!
‘Just A Dream’
Carrie released ‘Just A Dream’ as the fourth single from her sophomore album Carnival Ride. The song is so highly regarded that it was nominated for Best Female Country Vocal Performance at the 2010 GRAMMYs! Our Country Queen tells another powerful story of a woman in crisis. But, sadly, unlike ‘Jesus, Take The Wheel,’ the heroine doesn’t get a happy ending. Carrie masterfully sings of a young bride who receives news that her husband has died at war. Our hearts break for the widow, but Carrie’s voice manages to fill in the cracks with its warmth and richness.
‘One Way Ticket’
While Carrie Underwood knows how to bring the drama, our girl can deliver a summer jam, too! ‘One Way Ticket,’ from the epic Blown Away album, instantly transports us to the Florida Keys. Imagine if Carrie and Jimmy Buffett had a jam session! This song is pure Margaritaville vibes. So, of course, it is the perfect tune for chillin’ on the beach (or poolside) with your beverage of choice.
‘Quitter’ is an upbeat, slice of country-pop heaven. On Play On, Carrie Underwood’s third studio album, our Country Queen worked with talent outside of the country world. Swedish pop legends Max Martin and Shellback helped Carrie bring this sweet ode to future husband Mike Fisher to life. We, at THP, think ‘Quitter’ is the perfect song for anyone who won’t give up on love.
‘Before He Cheats’
Nothing is more dangerous than a woman scorned. In case you weren’t sure, listen to ‘Before He Cheats,’ Carrie’s third single from her debut album Some Hearts. In the swagger-filled revenge anthem, Carrie destroys her two-timin’ man’s car with her keys and a Louisville Slugger baseball bat. But, audiences and critics weren’t afraid of the dark subject matter. ‘Before He Cheats’ won two GRAMMYs – one for Best Female Country Performance and another for Best Country Song! Also, in 2007, the classic video won Video of The Year at the CMTs and at the Academy of Country Music Awards. While a certified country smash, ‘Before He Cheats’ also reached a peak of #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. We think it’s safe to say that this amazing song has become one of Carrie Underwood’s signature songs, as well as a cautionary tale.
‘How Great Thou Art’
We, at THP, were so excited when Carrie announced her latest album, My Savior. However, we had no idea how epic her version of the classic hymn ‘How Great Thou Art’ would actually be! Carrie sings with such passion and conviction that you can’t help but feel every word. Her voice soars above the clouds and reaches the heavens during the finale. Even if gospel music isn’t your thing, you’ll have no choice but to marvel at Carrie’s miraculous instrument.
