On June 25th, icon-in-the-making Doja Cat released her third album Planet Her, featuring collabs including The Weeknd, Young Thug, and Ariana Grande. The album spans multiple genres, from trap to R&B to disco and Latin influences, but it is still a cohesive body of work that once again gives us insight into the world of Doja Cat. Planet Her is an album that hits you from every angle. Doja seamlessly lyricises about the ups and downs of fame, situationships, female sexual empowerment, and sometimes being the villain in a relationship, all in the space of twelve songs.
Think Doja Cat Should Release Another Music Video? You Right!
Doja is one of the most visionary artists working right now; there’s never a part of her work that’s overlooked. She has such high-concept visuals and forward-thinking style, both on the red carpet and in her music videos, as seen in the latest single from Planet Her, ‘You Right’ with The Weeknd. The R&B-influenced track is about to be on all our playlists and should be on yours too. They are both powerhouses in songwriting, production, and genre-mixing, and the follow-up to the underrated gem ‘In Your Eyes (Remix)’ does not disappoint.
Baby, She’s Been In Her Bag
Another standout? The summery and tongue-in-cheek Ariana collab, ‘I Don’t Do Drugs’, is maybe their best work yet. Can you believe we’ve been blessed with three collaborations between them in less than a year? Doja Cat is a pop star who loves celebrating her inspirations and sharing the limelight; Ari, along with Ed Sheeran and Nicki Minaj, also get a shout-out in ‘Get Into It (Yuh)’ – “Y’all b*tches better yuh like Ariana.”
The album’s lead single, which we know you already know, is ‘Kiss Me More’ ft SZA, released on April 9. More than two months later, the song is still sitting pretty at number four on the Billboard Hot 100. Last month the pair performed ‘Kiss Me More’ for the first time at the BBMAs, where Doja also took home the award for Best R&B Female Artist.
Doja Cat has been a main pop girlie since the release of the 2019 megahit ‘Say So,’ which was her first Billboard Hot 100 number one. Since then, she has been nominated for three GRAMMY Awards, five Billboard Music Awards, four American Music Awards, four MTV VMA Awards, two BET Awards, and two People’s Choice Awards, and more.
‘Cause Doja’s One In A Million
In fact, the 2019 album Hot Pink is so incredible that she was still releasing singles from it until March this year, meaning we didn’t ever have to go through Doja-drought, thank goodness. Inspiring the silhouette TikTok challenge, ‘Streets’ is one of Doja Cat’s biggest and best songs. The video is the perfect example of why Doja Cat is one of the most exciting artists in the industry; the concept was already created for her – a sexy song with a sexy video. All Doja needed to do was a high-budget version of all those fan-made TikToks. But for elite creatives like Doja Cat and her team, that’s not enough. The video is as weird as it is sexy – Doja seems to be an artist that relishes catching her audience off guard.
Keep With Doja In The Moment
Doja Cat is also the Queen of reinventing both herself and her songs for live performances. When we say the punk rock version of ‘Say So’ from the MTV EMAs lives in our heads rent-free, we truly, truly, mean it. We can’t wait to see what she does with the live performances for Planet Her!
Just when we thought Doja had spoiled us enough, she’s just released Planet Her (Deluxe) with four more songs (including a collab with rap icon Eve) and the extended version of ‘You Right’ with The Weeknd. Listen to Planet Her, the new album by Doja Cat here.
