Canada is so underrated. Everyone talks about musical influences from Seoul to the British Invasion to New Orleans and the birth of jazz. But, honestly, where would we really be without Canada’s presence in the music industry? The truth is that Canada has bragging rights on being the birth place of some of the best acts in the pop world today! These acts represent this lovely country all around the world, and here are the ones you should all stan!
Hailing from Mississauga, Ontario, Johnny Orlando’s suave slow beats and power pop experiments keeps the country on the map. Fans of Why Don’t We and AJ Mitchell will love his hooking melodies. His upbeat and charming lines are no stranger to some of the artists we have on this Canada Day list. Like many of them, he started on the good old internet before catching the attention of major labels and signing to Universal. We have some good news too! Johnny Orlando is currently working on his debut album. What can we expect? Probably lots of surprises from the new Canadian youngster! We can’t wait to hear it, that’s for sure.
She became our princess the day she uploaded covers of Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’ and The Neighbourhood’s ‘Sweater Weather’ on Youtube. Then, she got signed to Def Jam and released her debut single ‘Here’ that smashed the Billboard chart. One of her biggest hits ‘Scars To Your Beautiful’ made its top ten debuts in 2017. She collaborated with the one and only Zedd on ‘Stay,’ and her vocals are so stunning and powerful. Of course, she is a new sovereign for Canada Day. She was indeed the second Canadian, after Céline Dion, to score a Disney movie tune. Yes, you heard her in Moana with the superb song ‘How Far I’ll Go.’ Her third album is on the way, and we just want to celebrate!
She is still our punk girl in our hearts. Avril Lavigne showed us that life was ‘Complicated,’ especially when we fall in love with a ‘Sk8ter Boi.’ The Belleville, Ontario, singer-songwriter kicked her career performing for our cowgirl queen Shania Twain at the age of 15. It’s such a dream! For nearly 20 years, she has entertained us with her raw energy and sensibility. The queen is back. In January, she announced she worked on her 7th album material and released this collab with Mod Sun, which burst us in ‘Flames.’
We are strong Beliebers here at THP! From his teenage debut with ‘Baby’ to his latest song ‘Peaches,’ what a journey for Justin Bieber! We can’t wait to see him live on his 2022 tour! From bubblegum pop to rap and R’n’B melodies, our baby is growing musically, and we are in love with his latest album Changes. Our Canada day wouldn’t be the same without him. Apart from music, he has such a charitable heart and gets involved in such good causes as Make-A-Wish. He donated money to mental health organizations and people in need through charities. Bieber is here to stay in our hearts.
How can we celebrate Canada Day without Shawn Mendes? Our favorite singer-songwriter brings such energy with his guitar and sensible songwriting. He’ll make you laugh, he’ll make you cry or dance. If you have spare time, go check Shawn Mendes: In Wonder and Shawn Mendes: Live In Concert on Netflix. This will be some great time well spent honestly. Time magazine in the USA named him amongst the most influential people in the world in 2018. The singer-songwriter stole our hearts, there is no doubt about it!
Did you know that this Calgary-born singer wrote for the likes of Rihanna, Icona Pop, and Kylie Minogue? The truth is we are addicted to Kiesza’s dance-infused songs, especially her hit single ‘Hideaway.’ She’s still active as a composer and working with some upcoming artists. Last year, she released her second album Crave. We live for the retro bops and the eighties influence synthpop track. All we can say is that she feeds us well for Canada Day!
The British Columbia singer’s first appearance was made in 2012 in a talent show hosted by the Much Music tv channel. He released radio-friendly songs that suited summertime perfectly with catchy pop sounds. The singer can go from dance melodies and electronic loops to charming guitars in a minute and that’s what we like. His latest song ‘Be Like You’ is the folk-pop ballad that engulfs our souls like Ed Sheeran ones. We also groove to the rockier ‘North Star’ and the R’n’B infused ‘Remember.’ Tyler Shaw’s voice is such a comfort in our weird days! He’s one to watch for Canada Day and beyond for sure!
You may have seen the Burnaby, British Columbia, entertainer face in many commercials around, especially the Bubly sparkling water brand in Canada. Michael Bublé is the Sinatra of Canada. We love his jazz vibes and smooth melodies that ascend in powerful chorus. We have him on our playlist for the festive Christmas season or even on wedding playlists. He croons hits after hits as ‘ Saved The Last Dance for Me,’ ‘Sway,’ or ‘Feeling Good’ and keeps some sparkling vibes on!
She got the grace of a queen. Before hitting the music industry, Charlotte Cardin walked the runways. She always loved music and she then found her voice on television on Quebec’s ‘La Voix.’ We can’t get enough of Charlotte Cardin. She puts us under her spells with her mysterious melodies. Both fluent in English and French, she released Phoenix, her debut album, this spring, and the talent is jumping. The singer-songwriter from Montreal is one to watch on Canada Day.
Why do we love The Weeknd? The multiplatinum-selling R’n’B star keeps shining on the international scene. Four albums later, he’s earned nearly 20 Billboard Music Awards (more to come soon we guess!), three Grammy trophies and so much more! He made fire collaborations with Ed Sheeran, Lana Del Rey, Daft Punk, and Ariana Grande. He’s the king of soulful retro vibes with so many grooves, and he proved it at his Super Bowl performance last year. His creativity is beyond everything. From ‘I Can’t Feel My Face’ to ‘Blinding Lights,’ The Weeknd has no skips! For your Canada Day party, the superstar’s music is essential to your playlist.
Of course, there is plenty of other acts we could have talked about. From Drake to Ruth B, Canada is such a big country full of talent that shines on the international scene. Who’s your pick to celebrate this wonderful Canada day? Tell us on Twitter @TheHoneyPop or Instagram.
