The wait for Black Widow has been excruciating, with the long-overdue film experiencing far too many delays and push-back dates. Though it was initially set to premiere in May 2020, Black Widow has endured three unfortunate release date changes, with Disney and Marvel finally settling on a definite July 9th, 2021 premiere this year.
Set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, the Scarlett Johansson-led film will be the kick-off film of Marvel’s Phase Four. Despite the roller coaster of release dates, there’s no doubting this movie will be just as badass as we hope. It promises the exploration of Natasha’s deeply intriguing backstory, fun, lighthearted humor, and of course, classic Marvel epic action scenes. Check out the trailer below and see for yourself.
As audiences crowd theaters in anticipation, the magnetic voice they’ll first hear luring them deep into Natasha’s story will be that of Hawaiian-born rising star, Malia J. That’s right, her haunting rendition of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ will accompany the film’s opening sequence, setting the tense and mysterious tone that reflects Romanoff herself.
We got chills listening to Malia J’s breathtaking execution of such an iconic Nirvana anthem. She remains respectful of the original while remolding it into a sultry ballad that gives off a captivating air of danger. We. Are. In. Awe.
Seriously, this song alone tells us the film will be well worth the wait.
Sounding Oddly Familiar?
If you think you recognize Malia J’s haunting vocals, that’s because she’s been captivating audiences with her soul-stirring covers for years. She’s been featured in hit television series like The Handmaid’s Tale, Gotham, and even Riverdale. Her enticing covers all evoke an unsettling atmosphere, perfectly suited to dark and gritty TV scenes.
If you’re now as obsessed with her style as we are, you’re in luck. For the first time ever, Malia J will grace us with her own original music — all in her unique style!
I’ve always written my own music, but when I started covering other artists’ music in a completely different light, people really connected to it. Now I’ve come full circle, creating my own music with the same dark, dramatic production style.
Her debut EP, Reflections, comes out later this summer and will feature her cover of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and four brand new original songs written by the singer herself! We literally cannot wait for that drop.
You can see how Malia J’s cover melds with the imagery of Black Widow when it’s released in theaters on July 9th and streaming on Disney+ with Premier Access the same day.
