BTS is #1 again, for the 8th week in a row, this time with their latest track ‘Permission to Dance‘ debuting atop the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard Global 200, Global 200 Excl. US singles and the Digital Song Sales charts. They join Drake as the only artists in history to replace themselves at #1 on the Hot 100 with two #1 debuts. They are also the artist with the most #1 hits on the Hot 100 (5) this decade and the group with the most weeks (17) at #1 in Artist 100 chart history! The list of broken records goes on and on.
The baton has been passed from the previous spot-holder ‘Butter’ which is at #7 this week and still #1 on Billboard’s Songs of the Summer 2021 chart. You see, what Yoongi wants, Yoongi gets, as BTS keeps reaching newer heights, with “ARMY right behind them.”
We at THP HQ, are sooo in the mood to celebrate, because hello?!? This is huge! No one is doing it like BTS! Therefore, we are bringing you our list of BTS’ best performances through the years, to solidify the fact. Not gonna lie, this was one tough list to curate so if we missed something, do let us know in the comments below! Aaaanndd let’s go – “dashi run run run!”
‘Dynamite’ – 2020 MMA / 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards
There are over 35 performances of ‘Dynamite‘ – the OG queen, but these two seem to stand out the most! The iconic dance break at the 2020 MMA broke the internet quite literally, with a center J-Hope in that violet jumpsuit, showing everybody how it is done – his breathtaking steps and the rest of Bangtan with their irresistible charisma and footwork, “breaking into your heart like that!”
The GRAMMYs were another level of iconic, marking the return of our favorite boy – Suga who remained in physical therapy for most of the end-year awards season due to his shoulder surgery. Performing at the GRAMMYs was one of their long-time goals which were manifested adequately as they not only bagged their own solo stage but also, became the first Korean group to be nominated for a golden gramophone in the Top Duo/Group Performance category.
Just in: ‘Dynamite’ has surpassed 1 Billion Streams on Spotify today. Our boys love to make breaking records left, right and center, look as easy as breathing!
‘Dionysus’ – 2019 MMA
BTS love turning award shows into their own concerts and know how to put on a spectacle, how to imprint one performance into our brains forever. This is a living, breathing example. If you’ve not watched this “Are you ready to get hyped up?” because this, in simple words is insane! The energy, the stage, the performers, the props, the vocals, the outfits, the crowd, the dance break! Oh my god! Chills. Period. Full Stop. End of conversation.
Special shoutout to the intro dance performance showcased by each member, solo, with remixes of their previous hits and man, Jimin – What are you? An angel? Did it hurt when you fell from heaven and blessed humankind with your existence? Take a look to know what we’re talking about and we recommend you watch it in 4k, for healing purposes. You’re welcome.
‘BTS Cypher Pt.4’ + ‘Mic Drop (Remix)’ – 2017 MAMA
Listen, this one is just – we’ve got one word, iconic! First, the rap line spitting fire with ‘Cypher Pt. 4’ and then all the seven boys for ‘Mic Drop!’ Oooof! 2017 was a magnificent year for BTS and ARMY with their international acclamation skyrocketing and their first Billboard Award win with Top Social Artist. This performance was their first one back home after the historic win and BTS did not come to play! They put everyone who tried to hold them down all these years, in their rightful places and showed the world, who the biggest player in the game is! (Special appreciation for headband Tae, btw! Man is so fine, it hurts.) “Everyday we vibin’, mic’ drop, bam!“
‘Airplane Pt. 2’ – 2018 MAMA In HONG KONG
BTS has, probably, the best dancers in the industry and it shows. The opening of this performance shows six members – V, Jimin, J-hope, Suga, RM & Jin belt out some amazing footwork followed by our ‘Golden Maknae‘ strutting down that ramp looking like a whole meal, and goddamn that was so sexy of you, Jeon Jungkook! Talk about sucking all the air out of one’s lungs. Also that Sope split?! The timing – immaculate! And red-haired Taehyung – this shouldn’t be free!
‘Fake Love’ – 2018 MAMA FANS’ CHOICE in JAPAN
“Sorijilleoooo” for potentially the best ‘Fake Love’ performance in the history of amazing ‘Fake Love’ performances! The crowd – do you see the crowd? It says it all. This dance break ought to go down in the history books, man. It’s frickin’ flawless! Trivia: No fandom lightsticks were allowed at this show and well ARMY – it doesn’t abide by the rules, it makes the rules. The results are in front of you.
‘ON’ – The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
“Win no matter what” is what BTS has been doing since forever! This is another example. The boys took over the Grand Central Station, New York for this epic showcase of the title track from 2020’s giant of an album Map of the Soul:7 which is still #1 on the World Albums chart for a record-extending 32nd week. The exhilarating performance features another one of their mind-boggling dance breaks, clearly evident from Jimmy’s “Oh My Gods” at the end.
‘DNA’ – 2017 American Music Awards
“Kim Namjoon, Kim Seokjin, Min Yoongi, Jung Hoseok, Park Jimin, Kim Taehyung, Jeon Jungkook, BTS!“
We couldn’t factually skip this one, their US TV Debut with the trailblazer of a bop – ‘DNA’ from 2017’s Love Yourself: Her. This one is special and a turning point in the history of the music industry per se, because it marked BTS’ starting point in their journey from the first K-Pop boyband in the world, to the only act in the world, and God how loud the fan chants were! A cultural reset indeed.
‘Boy Meets Evil Pt.1 & 2’ + ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’ + ‘Fire’ – 2016 MAMA
2016 MAMA was a stepping stone in the climb up the massive staircase to the pinnacle of unprecedented fame and success for BTS, with their first-ever Daesang win for Artist and Album of the Year. Huge! The performance was too. Whether it be Jimin opening the set mid-air or the fire & ice JiHope dance break with a blindfolded Mochi, or the TaeJin intro to ‘Fire.’ The performance in its entirety screams exquisite, and we have Jackson and BamBam of Got7 furiously attesting to the fact!
‘Idol’ – 2018 MMA / 2020 The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
“Running man, running man, running man, brah!“
We again struggled to pick a favorite performance of ‘Idol’ so both of these unique and equally epic performances made the cut. The 2018 MMA version shows a flamboyant display of what the Korean culture is made of, with enormous props and dance sequences from each member.
When the world got confined to their homes in 2020, BTS went all out with their performances and its venues; as far as to hire the Gyeongbokgung Palace, dressed in modern versions of the Korean hanbo. They basically ate up the 2020 version of ‘Idol’ and left no crumbs behind. (Jungkook in the ponytail – a slice of heaven.)
‘Pied Piper’ – 5th Muster Magic Shop 2019
The debut performance of ‘Pied Piper’ at BTS’ 5th Muster – Magic Shop, stirred up the fandom considerably, and it’s probably one of ARMYs’ favorite performances! The thrust stage, the outfits, and the purple ocean in the background serve as an ethereal experience! Finally the choreo at the center stage – historic, spell-binding! What a lucky audience that was! (PSA – In this house we stan purple-haired Kim Seokjin)
‘Butter’ – The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
This is Bangtan’s latest performance of their seven-time Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping phenomenon ‘Butter.’ Performing on the World Cup Bridge in Seoul’s Mapo-gu, BTS delivered, arguably, the best ‘Butter’ performance to date. It has BTS radiating that supermodel energy in their sensational black/white ensembles, strutting down the bridge, which is yet to be opened to the public. If this doesn’t testify to the power of BTS, we don’t know what does. Also, have you ever seen two pretty best friends? No? Vmin will prove you wrong, check it out!
‘Dope’/’Baepsae’ – Love Yourself (Osaka) 2018
Just how iconic was this show? This medley comprising two of Bangtan’s veteran hits – ‘Dope’/ ‘Baepsae’ perfectly captures the spirit of a BTS concert with the loudest crowd that one finds in BTS’ Japan concerts. We hope Bighit gave a raise to whoever styled the boys that day because do you see them? They look so good! *chef’s kiss*
‘Ddaeng’ /’Daechwita’ /’Chicken Noodle Soup’ (OT7 version) – 5th Muster Magic Shop 2019/2021 Muster Sowozoo
Our favorite genre of BTS performances has to be when during their annual Musters all the boys jump in on a rap line song and make it epic, epic, epic. You watch these once, they live in your mind rent-free, forever. Such is the charm of rapper JK, Jimin, Jin, and our biggest rap line enthusiast – V, along with the OGs Suga, RM, and Hope. Rapper Bangtan supremacy all the way (rise of the Taechwita cult – let’s go!)
‘Black Swan’ – 2020 MMA / 2020 SBS Gayo Daejeon
Again another iconic set of ‘Black Swan‘ performances we couldn’t take a pick from and so here you go. We wouldn’t even try to explain the MMA dance performance. It is an untouchable masterpiece and this is probably what breathing glitter must feel like. It is one for the history books, and all things otherworldly.
The SBS performance was equally epic and mind-blowing with those vocals, the Christmas-y remix, the all-black outfits, Jungkook in that man-bun, Jimin’s body rolls & well – BTS! Sheer perfection and then some. (We missed you, Yoongi)
Dear Class Of 2020
2020 was an unfortunate year with everyone spending most of it in the confines of their homes. Students never got to experience prom or their graduation ceremonies, so YouTube came up with a virtual show, hosted by Michelle Obama. Needless to say, the biggest boyband on the planet was invited to perform. The three-song set of ‘Boy With Luv,’ ‘Spring Day,’ and ‘Mikrokosmos’ was the ultimate comfort package for the students stuck at home due to the pandemic. BTS’ promise of a ‘Spring Day’ being around the corner was all the light that was needed to survive this dark tunnel of hopelessness and chaos.
Special shoutout to ‘Mikrokosmos’ at Speak Yourself in Seoul. This was BTS’ last concert with ARMY present physically and their last song on the setlist before the world stopped and suddenly concerts became life-threatening. The sheer emotions in the eyes of the boys and the crowd flow in waves, resonated through every spectator. You’d be lying and we’d know it if you said your heart didn’t crack a bit at this. Let’s hope we get to experience this again soon, and till then “You got me, I got you.“
That was quite the list, huh. We wish we could include more because every performance BTS does is magic, everything they touch turns to gold. Watch this space, we’ll hopefully bring you even more in future, including ‘Paradise’ and ‘Louder Than Bombs’ because it seems criminal that they’ve never been performed live. *sigh*
On the brighter side of things, BTS has exciting news for you. They want to see you dance and so you better up your game and put on your dancing shoes for the Permission to Dance Challenge starting this Friday, July 23 through Saturday, August 14, exclusively on YouTube Shorts. Show em’ what you got ARMY!
Till then, stream PTD for clear skin and free therapy, go go go!
