We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, we take pride in being able to introduce you to artists that we know you’ll love. One of those artists is Dasha and we have a feeling she’ll be making her way onto your playlists. Her most recent EP $hiny Things released earlier this year and has already catapulted her to 150,000 monthly listeners. And this is just the debut! Her dazzling vocals and heartfelt lyricism make every track of hers, such a joy to listen to and we’re absolutely certain that you’ll agree.
Her newest track ‘Nervous’ describes an intimate experience, in an honest, vulnerable, and emotional way. The emotions are encapsulated in the song so well and it’s the type of track that showcases talent. We got a chance to talk to Dasha about ‘Nervous’ as well as a whole lot more, so check out what she had to say!
You’ve said that ‘Nervous’ is about an intimate experience that was important for you to share and that it was a vulnerable moment. Did that make it harder for you to release the track and put your feelings out into the world like that?
My music has always been very vulnerable but ‘Nervous’ brings that intimacy to a whole new level. My goal in songwriting has always been to create music that is relatable and honest, and ‘Nervous’ definitely meets that goal.
You’re pretty active on TikTok, what do you think about how TikTok has impacted artists’ ability to share their music and take it viral in a whole new way?
TikTok is one of the best, if not the best platform for growing artists to find new fans and listeners. I’m so grateful for all the new supporters I have gained on TikTok in the past few months.
Is there anything you’ve encountered in the course of your career that has made you nervous?
Yes, all the time. Every time I’m in a session writing a new song I get nervous talking about really vulnerable situations – but those are the emotions worth writing about.
Do you draw a lot of your songwriting inspiration from personal experiences?
Yes, all of it. It’s the only way for me to write super authentic songs.
We absolutely love the vibe of ‘Nervous’ and how it captures that first time, fluttery feeling so well. Did you intend for it to be a more mellow, slow track from the get-go, or were there other sounds you wanted to experiment with?
The idea from the beginning was to build the song up in the verses and pre-chorus and then take it in the totally opposite direction than expected in the chorus with a breakdown. The production turned out exactly how I imagined it would be but even better.
Was ‘Love Me Till August’ also inspired by a personal experience?
Yes, it was. My best friend and I were going through the same things where we were talking to guys who were both moving away at the end of the summer. That’s where the song idea came from.
Your Instagram aesthetic and your style are absolute goals, where do you draw your style inspo from?
Thank you!! I get inspiration from all over. I really love high fashion magazines and photoshoots as well as low-key fit checks and everyday lifestyle content. I guess I pull from a lot of my friends, who I adore.
Having reached the point in your career that you’re at right now, what’s something you would go back to and tell your younger self about the path you’re on?
I would remind myself that success isn’t a competition between anyone except for you and your own self. Everyone has a different path. Just keep working your a** off and stay humble.
What’s one message you really hope to send to your fans with your platform and with your music?
I want my fans to know that I’m exactly like they are – I experience the same things that they do – get my heart broken, fall in love too easily, etc, etc. I want to inspire them to do whatever they want to do with their lives and to always know that they are loved and accepted just as they are. I know a lot of people don’t have parents or a support system that supports them unconditionally while they grow up, but they have it in me and my music.
Who are some artists you’re inspired by right now? Anyone you’d love to collab with?
I love anything and everything Julia Michaels does. Taylor Swift is the reason I started writing. Jeremy Zucker, Kiana Lede, and Lizzy McAlpine have been on repeat lately, too. Dream collab would be with any of them.
As live music slowly starts to come back, are there any venues or places you really want to play a show at one day?
I love playing outdoor theatres so Red Rocks has always been a dream. But I also wouldn’t mind selling out the Staples Center. In the nearer future, Nashville has some iconic venues like Marathon Music Works that I’d love to play as well.
What can fans lookout for this year?
All I can say is it’s album season baby.
We told you, Dasha is one to watch. You’re going to want to keep an eye out for whatever she has in store next because we’re sure it’s going to be fantastic.
