Fandoms are super powerful in sharing information and working on projects, so using those impressive skills for a good cause ends in some great results.
The past 18 months have been truly unprecedented times around the world, and for Indonesia, life has truly become dire. As of right now, they have the highest new COVID 19 cases in the world and have overtaken India to be the new epicenter of the coronavirus in Asia, according to the World Health Organization. The number COVID 19 cases have well passed the 1 million point, with the death toll rapidly following behind. In addition to this, medical experts believe there are numerous unrecorded cases due to the country’s low testing rate. The pandemic has well and truly taken a toll on the nation as a whole though with an impact on women in particular where they have been disproportionately fired and put on furlough while taking on more household responsibilities as children are kept at home. Many households have inadequate access to clean water, good personal hygiene, and ample space. Pressing poverty also continues to dramatically affect children, with 13.5 percent of children living below the official poverty line, and the vulnerability rate – defined as the share of children living just above the poverty line but less than 1.5 times the poverty line – also rising.
To honor K-POP idol Mark Lee of NCT and SuperM’s birthday, Mark & Friends have chosen to fundraise for two incredible causes that help provide support during these extremely debilitating situations. We’ve spoken to the organizers to learn more.
Can you introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi! We are Mark & Friends and I’m Del from the social media team. Basically, Mark & Friends is a Mark Lee fanbase project from Indonesia, since 2018. We tend to create projects to celebrate Mark’s birthday.
In honor of Mark Lee’s birthday, you are fundraising for Yayasan Indonesia Hijau and Bina Bukti Nusantara. What inspired you to create this fundraiser?
Our project started off last year. After the whole Covid-19 streaks, we were thinking to celebrate Mark Lee and his birthday in a meaningful way. That is how the donation project started. We tried to reflect upon Mark’s positivity by doing good deeds throughout the whole project. This year, our project focus on humanity. After doing some research, we decided to do fundraising for Yayasan Hijau & Bina Nusantara because what they do align with our values & goals.
What can you tell us about these two charities? How will the project’s funds support the charity?
These two charities are mainly for humanity purposes. Each organization will decide where will the funds will be used for. But as a depiction, Yayasan Indonesia Hijau is a foundation that works in social, health, education, and environment. They have Rumah Singgah which is a sanctuary to take care of 148 unfortunate kids. As for Bakti Nusantara, it is a movement focused on developing isolated areas in Indonesia.
We know Mark along with NCT and SuperM has been involved in philanthropy and charity work. How would you say he inspires you?
Mark Lee inspired us in many ways, indeed. His work ethic, and a positive mindset. His devotion towards his religion and how he appreciates people around him are just several traits we look upon him. He extends those positivities to everyone around him, including us his fans. Also, we are aware that NCT regularly does volunteer work & charity. You can say those who give us inspiration have the same spirit to do good deeds.
We know how powerful fandoms are, what do you think about fandoms and the importance of using their platforms for vital causes such as this one?
Fandoms are indeed powerful. They have dedication towards their favorite artist. They were the source of energy to support the artist and make the project successful. Any information spreads speedily within the fandom. We tried to use this opportunity to spread awareness about our project.
How can people support your fundraiser?
Everyone is open to donating with the Mark Lee fankit package as feedback in return, but there is an option to donate without receiving the fankit. The fankit itself comes in a variety of options for you to choose. There are packages which can be chosen. Actually, there is no limit for the donation. However, if you want to get a particular package, there is a minimum amount of donation should be given. Unfortunately, the donation has closed right now, but don’t worry. Maybe we can meet next time!
Thanks, Del! We know Mark would be super proud of you and the team!
