half•alive Has Ignited All Our Feels In ‘Summerland’

half•alive has served us their newest single ‘Summerland’ released via RCA Records, and we think we have found our next jam for the rest of the year as we are obsessed with this song. It is a stunning summer anthem that has it all; late-night outings with friends, swimming at night, dancing until dawn, beach strolls and soaking up the sun. A quick glance at this song would suggest it is just a summer song; however, there’s so much more underneath! So hold your cocktail in your hand and get ready for a crazy ride.

“Everything is freedom/ Though the seasons change/
And the trees start dying/ And the sunlight leaves your face/
Hear the crack of lightning/ Where your heart will break/
Into new beginnings, beginning to erase.”

Romanticizing The Summer

‘Summerland’ served as one of the finest summer releases this year. A summer tune was high on the trio’s agenda for quite a while, and it all came together nicely here. The song is composed by half•alive and Skyler Stonestreet and produced by OJIVOLTA. ‘Summerland’ sprang from a conversation about the seasons reflecting patterns in life. As the band described, every season symbolizes a stage in life. The romance and fruit of summer (noon, maturity) give way to the dramatic death of Autumn (sunset, aging), to the death of Winter (midnight, death), & the rebirth of Spring (sunrise, youth).

Now the year is aging/ And the shadows grow/
And the color’s fading/ And the people start to slow/
Like a crowded station/ Where the air is cold/
All the strangers waiting/ For the train that could bring them home

There is something magical and exceptional about the summertime. During this time of year, all seem to be at peace with ourselves and the universe. It is the happiest period of our lives that we want to last forever. A perfect weave of music, art, visuals, and literature appears in the song, and every element ties back to the beauty of ‘Summerland.’ No matter what season it is, it is such an infectious tune that deserves to be listened to whenever and wherever you please. When asked about the inspiration behind the song, half•alive stated,

Summerland’ was created from a conversation about patterns I had with my uncle in Oakland, CA sometime last year, specifically, about the patterns of life as seen through the seasons… how the seasons show us the same pattern of the day, & of our life stage, & so much more. I became so fascinated by this pattern & how structural it is to music & art & literature.

One To Watch

half•alive’s music has been evolving and growing since its inception in 2017. ‘Summerland’ follows previous singles ‘Time 2’ and ‘What’s Wrong,’ which were released earlier this year. Their breakthrough single ‘still feel’ was massively appreciated around the world. It is certified Gold by the RIAA and has garnered over 276 million streams worldwide. With the track garnering acclaim from the media, the music video also exceeded 10 million views in just two months. In 2019, the band sold out their official debut headlining tour and played major festivals such as Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, and Bumbershoot.

They also made their late-night television debut with a memorable performance of ‘still feel’ on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Enjoy the video above! The fiery trio has the potential to become the next big sensation in music with its incredible talent and creativity. You don’t want to miss out on them, so keep them on your radar.
