Not only has it been long since The Boyz last had a comeback, but it has been even longer since we’ve seen a bright concept from them. But now, they’re back with their incredible sixth mini-album THRILL-ING and its bright and refreshing title track, ‘THRILL RIDE.’ It’s a ride, and we’re loving every single part of it.
To say that ‘THRILL RIDE’ is refreshing is to say the obvious. This song is so bright and carefree, and yet, it is so special at the same time. At the end of the day, The Boyz always have their own way of doing things.
‘THRILL RIDE’ has this melody that repeats throughout most of the song and it makes the song all the more addictive and fun. But don’t let that fool you. The structure of the verses and the bridge is so interesting – you never get twice of the same thing apart from the pre-chorus and the chorus. But the thing is, whenever you feel like you have this song figured out, you’ll realize you don’t. And that’s what makes it so fun and unique, and truly a ride. ‘THRILL RIDE’ has a way of showing the best aspects of The Boyz, from vocals to raps and choreography, this song has it all.
The music video is just as colorful as you might expect. Yet, it isn’t straight-up cute and bright. Again, ‘THRILL RIDE’ is a much more complicated song than it seems, and the music video and choreography are just the same. They take on different backgrounds and aesthetics, and they also kind of take on characters. It is such a refreshing and fun music video that complements ‘THRILL RIDE’ perfectly, but we didn’t expect any less from The Boyz.
It’s been two years since the last time The Boyz did a summer concept, but ‘THRILL RIDE’ is so far away from ‘D.D.D.’ It is truly amazing to see how they always manage to put their own twist to every concept. And they always come out with new unique things.
And talking about new things: the choreography. The Boyz are known for being one of the best groups when it comes to performances. And indeed, the amount of energy this choreography requires is insane. Even though it might seem very fun, easy and carefree, it is so much more than that when you go into it. It is truly proof of not only their talent but also their hard work. One thing’s for sure, it is so fun to watch and gives life to the song like only they could.
The first b-side in THRILL-ING is ‘Out Of Control,’ a song that at first might seem way darker than the title track. However, as the song progresses, it leads you to this much brighter chorus. The more edgy side of The Boyz comes out in the verses, while the chorus shows a more polished side of them. On the other hand, ‘Dancing Till We Drop’ is a more straightforward song. The groovy bass gives off a summer vibe in this dance track. It kind of follows the carefree vibe of ‘THRILL RIDE,’ but in a totally different way. The instrumental is so addictive and fun. We get nothing but serotonin from this song.
That being said, as soon as ‘Dancing Till We Drop’ ends, ‘Nightmares’ starts. The fourth track in THRILL-ING could almost be described as a horror song. With its opening vocals and harmonization, ‘Nightmares’ creates an atmosphere of suspense and intrigue, and it’s incredible. The lyrics talk about how they feel swallowed by something toxic. It is a more vocal-based track, but it’s also very interesting how the grabbing rap verses are worked into the song. ‘Nightmares’ is such an interesting b-side, and it’s truly one-of-a-kind.
And sticking to darker and sadder songs, ‘Merry Bad Ending’ may be probably the best b-side in THRILL-ING, but its title says it all. If you’re looking for a nostalgic song about still wanting to hang on to something that’s already over… Well, you’re in the right place. In all seriousness, the way they conveyed these bittersweet and complicated feelings is just perfect. And when we tell you the pre-chorus is pop excellence, it doesn’t make it justice. This is truly a gem not only in the album but in The Boyz’s discography. ‘Merry Bad Ending’ doesn’t sound straight-up sad, it might even seem hopeful, but that’s exactly the beauty of it – how well it portrays these complicated desperate feelings towards something that’s already over.
But don’t worry, THRILL-ING doesn’t end on a sad note at all. The closing track, ‘B.O.Y (Bet On You)’ is a much brighter song that actually brings so much comfort. As you listen to it, it literally feels like making memories. It is so bright, hopeful, comforting, and a perfect way to end such a mini-album. It feels like a light at the end of the tunnel in so many ways.
With only six songs, The Boyz truly takes us on a ride with this one. They came back with a bright concept, but they also explored so many different genres and released refreshing and unique songs. With THRILL-ING and ‘THRILL RIDE,’ The Boyz show better than ever all the things they’re able to do. We’ve never been happier to listen to a The Boyz comeback and see them enjoying every part of it because we are too. And it keeps getting better every time with The Boyz.
