Cue the opening credits for another angsty coming-of-age film. ‘Outta My Head’ by State Champs feels taken from the soundtrack of classics like Jennifer’s Body and Not Another Teen Movie. Reminiscent of the black eyeliner, wristbands that pile to the elbows, and low-waisted jeans. The song does what technology can’t yet: take us back in time. State Champs are experts at creating profound shock waves of nostalgia. Plummeting from the speakers to our chests, it leaves us longing for an era in time we all dearly miss.
For those who have yet to give new State Champs a try, ‘Outta My Head’ is the innocuous gateway into a rabbit hole of the good old days. It gives ‘New Perspective’ by Panic! at the Disco vibes (Jennifer’s Body), a song that dug at the fiery heels of Paramore‘s ‘Decode’ (The Twilight Saga). We think it’s safe to say some of the best pop-punk songs to date have started on raunchy teen movie soundtracks. So here we ask, who’s going to commission State Champs?
The ‘Outta My Head’ music video follows a skater with caused trouble, stealing cars, and breaking into tennis courts. Equipped with a damn-the-man attitude, our protagonist shows us that deviance is what keeps you young. And only those that shelter their youth prevail. With ‘Outta My Head’ being the second single following ‘Just Sound,’ we’re anticipating the new State Champs album to be chock full of yearning, despair, and adrenaline — all the inner workings of a soon-to-be classic pop-punk album.
Looking to see an iconic band live? State Champs are hitting the road with a heap of other emos on the roster. Four Year Strong, Real Friends, Just Friends, and Bearings are set to play shows along the US starting September 14th. To read more on the 2021 Pure Noise Tour, we got you covered.
