On September 8th, the hyperpop duo 100 gecs announced that they will release their sophomore album 10000 gecs very soon. At The Honey POP, we’ve been waiting to hear this ever since they dropped 1000 gecs in 2019. The group, made up of Dylan Brady and Laura Les, pushes musical boundaries in ways that still blow our minds, creating a soundtrack to cyberspace. We go crazy over their refusal to follow the rules when it comes to deafening electronic music, and it seems like 10000 gecs will be a continuation of the band’s tradition of disregarding tradition.
Here’s What To Expect
Laura Les boiled it down to one sentence in an interview with Pitchfork: “It’s 10 times as good as the last one.” Considering that their other music is already S tier, we’ll probably all ascend to another dimension when we listen to 10000 gecs. The album draws from a wide array of influences, including ska, alt-rock, and nu-metal. Dylan and Laura also take inspiration from the animal kingdom on ‘Frog on the Floor,’ which features frogs ribbiting.
Thanks to the help of mega-talented studio drummer Josh Freese, who has worked with Guns N’ Roses, Nine Inch Nails, and Katy Perry, 100 gecs’ upcoming release will have several “big pop songs” like ‘Me Me Me.’ Furthermore, you know a song is going to slap when one of its creators describes it as “a jock jam, NFL banger,” which is what Laura said of ‘Hollywood Baby.’
10000 gecs is unique in that we’ll get to hear Laura’s voice without any Auto-Tune on several songs. Previously, heavy vocal effects masked her natural sound and eventually became her musical signature. The singer, a trans woman, explained, “As I’ve been exploring my voice more, I’m like, ‘I can do this.'” A true queen. Needless to say, there are so many reasons why we’re stoked to devour what 100 gecs have cooked up.
