Coldplay x BTS’ ‘My Universe’ Conquers The Billboard Charts

Welcome to episode 61307 of BTS and Coldplay breaking records and making it seem as easy as breathing. This time, it’s with their latest collab ‘My Universe‘ which, not far from expectations, debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200 singles chart, both including and excluding the US, Digital Song Sales chart (tying with Taylor Swift with six hits each), and also the Billboard Rock & Alt charts.

To add to all of that ‘My Universe’ becomes the first collaboration between two lead groups to reach No. 1 on Hot 100 in the chart’s history. It’s also Coldplay’s first number #1 since 2008, and BTS’ 6th over a span of a year and a month (making them the artist with most #1s this decade with hits like ‘Dynamite,’ ‘Life Goes On,’ ‘Butter‘ and the latest ‘Permission to Dance‘), the fastest since The Beatles. #COLDTAN cultural reset ya’ll.

The Music Video

The release of the charts comes shortly after the release of the Dave Meyers-directed music video for ‘My Universe‘ which finds Coldplay, BTS, and Supernova7 on an intergalactic mission to overpower the “Silencers” who have forbidden music across spheres in a timeline set in the future. The music video follows Coldplay from Planet Floris (from the music video of their previous single ‘Higher Power’) and BTS from Planet Calypso as they join Supernova7 in Planet Supersolis.

It finds the members mingling around with the native alien species in the respective planets and with each other via distorted holograms, as they belt out the lyrics to the beautiful track, in an attempt to overthrow the “silencers” and restore the Music of The Spheres. Resembling intergalactic Sci-Fi greatnesses like Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy, the spaceships and foreign planets are almost real-looking, as if they which might exist in the universe. The music video is a great one, having a cool storyline with music at its heart. Take a bow green screen and CG team!

Coldplay and BTS’ Friendship Is One To Look Up To

Throughout the process of this collaboration, Coldplay and BTS’ friendship has been so endearing and heartwarming to witness. A real-life example of this is Chris Martin travelling to Seoul, South Korea and his relentless compliments to BTS on Inside ‘My Universe’ Documentary or BTS getting them modern hanboks when they met in New York.

The way they are so appreciative of each other and their very different styles but their common love for music, just shows this is how it should be. Music shouldn’t be partitioned and fought over, because it is all-inclusive, transcending languages, countries, cultures, ethnicity, and every other possible barrier because literally – “We are made of each other, baby.”

“We really don’t believe in any boundaries or separation of anything really, and so the song ‘My Universe’ is about someone being told they can’t love a certain other person, or can’t be with this race, or they can’t be gay – whatever it might be,”

Chris Martin in his interview on the Kelly Clarkson Show

Yesterday, in celebration of the Hot 100 #1, Coldplay also uploaded the only live performance physically featuring all members of BTS and Coldplay in a huddle singing ‘My Universe’ acoustically, and you can gauge from the energy in the room, the sheer positivity that radiates out of everyone present. This song and collab really is our happy pill, perhaps our favorite of the year so far, too.

In other news, BTS and Coldplay also scored their first #1 on the Rolling Stone 100 chart, and that’s a tough nut to crack, but hey, they did it. ARMY and Coldplayers, you did it! High five!

By the way, Coldplay’s album Music of the Spheres is coming out October 15th which you can pre-order/pre-save here, and BTS is coming to Sofi Stadium, LA for the Permission To Dance On Stage – LA shows – BTS’ first in-person concerts since 2019’s BTS WORLD TOUR ‘LOVE YOURSELF: SPEAK YOURSELF’ [THE FINAL] in Seoul; tickets for which are available on Ticketmaster, starting today.
