Halloween is a great excuse to read some scary, uncanny stories. But we’d like to remind you that horror is not only about ghosts, supernatural events, and so on. Sometimes the thing that scares us most is hidden within real life itself. So, in this list, you won’t only see ghosts, witchcraft, mythical monsters, there’s more. If you are ready, let’s begin.
The Ghost Variations: One Hundred Stories by Kevin Brockmeier
Who doesn’t love a good ghost story? I guess we know the answer but Kevin Brockmeier steps up his game. In this book, you will find 100 short ghost stories. We guarantee that you are going to feel chills going down your spine. Since the stories are very short, you will enjoy them so much. The best part is the ghosts of this book are not just folklore creatures, but are also a metaphor. You will witness how people in real life can turn into ghosts in a blink of an eye, besides classic, fun ghost stories. You can order the book here.
American Midnight: Tales of the Dark by Laird Hunt
Ah, good old American gothic! Trust us, American writers have always been so good at writing uncanny stories and this book proves it. The book contains ten American gothic stories. Some of them are classics, some of them are more modern. Laird Hunt collected these stories and introduced each of them to give us a good taste of horror and also to show us the progress of American gothic through history. From Edgar Allan Poe to Mark Twain, from Zora Neale Hurston to Emma Frances Dawson, this book is everything you need for this Halloween. Go on, order the book here!
This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno
Ah, horror thrillers! We. love. them. Gus Moreno really did a great job giving us the best seat on this ride. The book begins at a funeral. Creepy from the start, right? It is basically about a widower who has lost his wife trying to deal with grief and loneliness. It gets better when technology gets involved. Technology being portrayed as “the modern evil” is not something new to us but in this book, you will see how badly it can affect you. Here, experience it yourself.
Ghosts by Edith Wharton
When you say uncanny stories, Edith Wharton is one of the first writers that come to our minds. She is a mastermind for mixing supernatural events with gender studies, problems of society, and morality. She doesn’t only make you shiver but also makes you think about how the world works. Also, what is a Halloween book without ghosts? This book is a collection of Edith Wharton’s gothic stories. Believe in us, you are going to enjoy it. The book will be out on October 26 and you can pre-order it here.
Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw
You really didn’t think we wouldn’t include a haunted house novel in this list? Come on! Let us tell you about Nothing But Blackened Teeth a little bit and you won’t hesitate in ordering it. A group of friends goes to Japan for a wedding and they decide to rent a Heian-era mansion. Turns out the mansion’s already got its own bride, yes, a ghost. The book consists of a lot of important elements of Japanese folklore but the true horror behind the plot is the harsh reality of human relationships. If you love some familiar plots mixed with mythology and modern problems, you are gonna love this as much as we do! You can order it here.
The Book Of Magic by Alice Hoffman
Did somebody say witchery? We got you! The Book Of Magic is the last book of The Practical Magic Series written by Alice Hoffman. In this book, everything in the series gets wrapped up and it has almost all of the characters in the book, so if you don’t want to read the first three, you can directly jump into this one. So, the only thing you should know is there is a big family called The Owens’ and all Owens women are witches. Where there are witches, there is a curse. In this situation, The Owens’ are the ones who got cursed a hundred years ago, and the curse gets triggered every time an Owens falls in love. In The Book Of Magic, they come together and try to break this old curse but they realize they need to give a lot of sacrifices to do that. The book just came out, so, order it while it’s still fresh!
