Everyone goes through rough patches and while they can feel very isolating, you’ll always have music to help you through! We at THP know how it feels to struggle with anxiety and love that some of our favorite artists have been open with their own experiences. Here are six songs we like to blast when we need a pick-me-up!
BENEE – ‘Doesn’t Matter’
BENEE opens up about her experiences with obsessive-compulsive disorder on her new single ‘Doesn’t Matter,’ a catchy indie-pop track that ponders, “what is it like to unwind?” OCD is a type of anxiety where someone has fears or unwanted thoughts, called obsessions, and may perform certain rituals or anxiety-reducing routines, called compulsions, to relieve those fears.
I wrote ‘Doesn’t Matter’ during one of these periods when I felt truly overwhelmed, anxious, and stuck. I was diagnosed with OCD, which actually helped me understand myself better. This song ponders on what it would be like to feel truly carefree and how much easier life would be. Sometimes, it’s hard for people who don’t suffer from anxiety or depression to really understand what it’s like for us. People telling you not to worry or saying ‘It doesn’t matter’ don’t understand that it’s not that simple. Having had help to learn how to deal with my own anxiety and depression, I want others to know that there is a way through.
Dermot Kennedy – ‘Better Days’
While it isn’t specifically about anxiety, Dermot Kennedy’s ‘Better Days’ is the perfect reminder that things do get better. We love Dermot’s optimistic view and calming voice! As he sings in the chorus, “we’ll be dancing on the sun” eventually, so it’s best to stay positive and focus on taking care of yourself.
Maggie Lindemann – ‘Knife Under My Pillow’
Much of Maggie’s PARANOIA EP talks about her experiences with mental health and ‘Knife Under My Pillow’ is an energetic example! It’s based on one of her specific paranoia fears that led her to literally keep a knife under a pillow – she explained to Zach Sang:
One day I was texting someone because I thought someone was breaking into my house. It turned out to be my roommate, but I was sleeping with a knife under my pillow, so I sent him a picture with the knife under my pillow.
Royal & The Serpent – ‘overwhelmed’
Royal & The Serpent’s breakout hit ‘overwhelmed’ describes sensory overload and panic attacks in the face of the 24-hour news cycle and the COVID-19 pandemic. If you’ve been told you’re “too sensitive” while experiencing anxiety, this is the song for you!
Shawn Mendes – ‘In My Blood’
Shawn commits to persevering through hard times on ‘In My Blood,’ an honest track on which he admits to “feeling nothing” and feeling “like the walls are closing in” but still refuses to give up on himself and his dreams. It’s such a motivating song and we love Shawn’s vulnerability in the lyrics!
Taylor Swift – ‘The Archer’
One of fans’ favorite tracks on her 2019 album Lover, ‘The Archer’ describes Taylor’s anxiety about her loved ones leaving, as well as the idea of putting on a brave face in spite of these fears. The soft synth-pop production never reaches a drop like listeners might expect, mirroring how anxiety can feel like an endless wave.
