Music Rewind 2021: Little Mix Celebrate 10 Years And The End Of An Era

2021 has been a landmark year for Little Mix. It marks the first year they began working on projects as a trio and ten years since they first won The X Factor, making them the first group in history to do so. Let’s take a look at some of the girls’ many highlights from the past 12 months.

‘Confetti Remix’ Featuring Saweetie

Little Mix closed off their Confetti era by making the title track their last single from the album, and recruited none other than Saweetie for a new version. The music video saw the girls taking on drag personas as J-Dog, Pez, and Lenny with a hilarious dance-off between the two groups. The song ended up becoming certified Gold both in the UK and Brazil. QUEENS.

Making History At The BRITs

In a postponed ceremony for the 2021 BRITs, Little Mix went and made music history as they became the first girl group ever to win the award for Best Group. This was a momentous day for women in music, and Leigh-Anne, Jade, and Perrie knew just how important it was, as they dedicated their award to “incredible female bands” who have missed out on the award in the past, including the Spice Girls, Sugababes, and Girls Aloud. They also went on to make a powerful statement in their speech, with Leigh saying: “It’s not easy being a female in the UK pop industry. We’ve seen the white male dominance, misogyny, sexism, and lack of diversity.” POP OFF, LEGENDS.

Leigh-Anne: Race, Pop And Power

Back in May, Leigh-Anne released her BBC documentary Leigh-Anne: Race, Pop and Power, which was directed by Natasha Gaunt and followed the Little Mix star as she opens up about racial issues and colorist which she has experienced in life and in the music industry, and how being the only Black member of Little Mix. The documentary opened conversations, highlighted the issues dealt with by the Black community, and followed the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of the murder of George Floyd back in 2020. Leigh also announced her charity, The Black Fund, with her fiancé Andre Gray, sister Sarah Pinnock, and friend and mentor Jay Blades.

The documentary went on to win the Media Progress Moment at the Ethnicity Awards and Best Documentary at the I Talk Telly Awards. We are so proud of you, Leigh!

‘Heartbreak Anthem’

We got some pure bangers from Little Mix this year, and ‘Heartbreak Anthem‘ was the ultimate collab with the girls, David Guetta, and Galantis, which was the soundtrack to our summer. The song went on to be certified Gold in Canada and Platinum in the UK, and it even became the song to cross Little Mix over the threshold of spending 100 weeks on the Top 10 UK Singles Chart, being the first girl group ever to do so. We love that legendary behavior!

Immortalized At Madame Tussauds

After years of demand from Mixers, Madame Tussauds made our wishes come true in July as they made Little Mix wax figures! The girls’ likenesses are dressed in their actual outfits from the ‘Bounce Back’ music video and are at home in the London museum for fans to snap a selfie with. The waxworks were made to mark their 10 year anniversary and had been in the works since early 2020, with the girls attending sittings where hundreds of precise measurements of them were taken and each of them advising on the final details of each figure. You can catch us there on the regular after Confetti Tour next year.

‘Kiss My (Uh Oh)’

We were blessed with another collab in July and this time with none other than Anne Marie! The song served as the fourth single from Anne Marie’s second studio album, and it contains a sample of Lumidee’s 2003 hit ‘Never Leave You (Uh Oooh Uh Oooh).’ Directed by the iconic Hannah Lux Davis, the four girls had a blast filming the music video, inspired by 2011 comedy the Bridesmaids, recreating some iconic scenes from the movie. It has since been certified Silver in the UK and is still on our playlists to this very day.

10 Years Of Little Mix

August 19th, 2021, marked 10 years since Little Mix were first formed on The X Factor, and it is a truly iconic moment in music history. The girls announced their special album Between Us, a compilation of their greatest hits over the past decade and some new songs, released later in the year. It was an emotional day of reminiscence and celebration of such an achievement, and we’re getting emotional just thinking about it, so let’s keep it moving…

Welcoming Baby Mix To The World

Spring was quite the chaotic time in Mixerland when in the space of a week, Perrie and Leigh-Anne announced they were both expecting babies! The week of their 10th anniversary, both girls gave birth to healthy babies, with Perrie having a baby boy and Leigh-Anne having twins. Mixer Mums and Baby Mix are the CUTEST ever, and Jade further proves that she is such an iconic auntie. She even wore baggy clothes in solidarity with the girls when hiding their bumps before making their announcement to allude that it was a group fashion choice. She even joined in complaining when not feeling too good when working on trying and making it less suspicious. A TRUE FRIEND RIGHT THERE. Knowing that the girls will be taking time to spend with their babies during those important early years makes this hiatus a little easier.

‘Love Sweet Love’

Love Sweet Love‘ officially kicked off the Between Us era in September, serving as the lead single from the album and their first official single as a trio. The song sings about female empowerment, self-love, and independence, with the music video featuring the girls as goddesses (which ofc we already knew they were). According to the director Samuel Douek, it was inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite art movement and the lesser-known Sisterhood that romanticized nature and emboldened women through painting. This was one of three music videos the girls shot ahead of Perrie and Leigh’s maternity leave. Given the fact that they worked so hard when 2/3 were heavily pregnant, we cannot accept any opinions lower than the fact this is a fact masterpiece.

Jade X Beauty Bay

October saw a new kind of collab in the form of makeup as Jade teamed up with Beauty Bay to create her own palette. The Jade palette represents things from Jade’s world, such as Little Mix, her loved ones, her hometown, and more by taking on the astrological aesthetic. It features 42 matte and metallic shades with a variety to create all kinds of looks, whether lovely and lowkey or beautiful and bold. It’s just so Jade!

The Launch Of Disora

It was Perrie’s turn to step out for a solo project, and after years in the making, her contemporary luxury brand Disora officially launched in October. In under 48%, the first drop of the collection sold out of its one-time stock filled with a hoodie, sweatshirt, leather-look blazer, and a denim jacket amongst other desirable pieces. Pez has since teased more is on the way as she shared posts about working on the collection and we can hardly wait!

‘No’

‘No’ served as the second single from Between Us and was released cohesively with the album. The song sings about having the ability to finally say “no” after being such a “yes” person to please people. Speaking about the song, Leigh described it as “a classic Little Mix track, but also fresh and new at the same time.” The music video took the form of a skit with the girls playing Desperate Housewives-inspired characters who finally take control of the man-child men in their lives to get them to play their part and do chores with remote control. Talented. Funny. Gorgeous. Yep, that’s Little Mix!

Between Us

Between Us dropped on November 12th, marking not only the celebration of Little Mix’s decade-long career but also the last album the girls would be dropping before their hiatus. The album includes their smash hits and fan favorites, as well as some of the girls’ personal faves. The album also features five new songs, including the two singles, plus ‘Cut You Off,’ ‘Trash,’ and the title track ‘Between Us.’ A music video commemorating the 10 years of Little Mix was released for ‘Between Us’ and truly captures the girls’ incredible bond. Between Us has already been certified Silver in the UK and Platinum in Australia. What a high to end the year!

We are truly and utterly so proud of Little Mix and wish them all the best during their hiatus – we will for sure be supporting them in whatever they do. See you at the Confetti Tour!
