2021 Music Rewind: Halsey Proves How Much Can Change In A Year

Halsey is quite literally taking over the world, we see them grow more and more every year. With 2021 coming to a close and being another write-off of a year, Halsey proves that even in isolation and without worldwide tours, they can achieve anything! New releases, new projects and, old music reaching massive. milestones, 2021 has been a Manic year for Halsey.


To kickstart the year Halsey celebrated the one-year anniversary of Manic, which has been their most successful album so far. She then put the first drop of About Face Beauty up for pre-order, which went live on. the 25th. About Face is such an innovative, experimental, makeup line, it’s everything we ever needed. On the 27th, we were hit by a huge pregnancy announcement, Halsey has been very open about their experiences in life, so when she shared the news of this, we were over the moon. Many, many tears were shed. During this month, Manic also spent a whole year on the Billboard 200.


About Face had another line added on the 8th of February. The “Anti-Valentine” release was made to encourage people to love and celebrate themselves rather than needing to have someone else to celebrate the day with. Halsey became the most streamed female artist with 215 million streams during February 2021. ‘You Should Be Sad’ was certified platinum in the UK with over 600,000 units sold, as well as the song reaching over 100 million views on YouTube.


March was a quieter month for new releases. However, ‘Gasoline’ did surpass 500 million on streams on Spotify. Halsey surpassed 544 million streams on Spotify, which made them the 11th most streamed female artist in 2021. Their collaboration with The Chainsmokers on ‘Closer’ was certified 18x platinum in Australia with 1.26 million units sold. ‘Closer’ also surpassed 5 billion global streams on Spotify and YouTube combined.


On the 22nd of April, About Face dropped the first part of the “daytripper” line. Full of bright colors, it gave us the 60s and 70s vibes we were all so desperate for. April the 29th was when the second part of “daytripper” dropped, expanding the shade range. Manic surpassed 2.9 billion streams on Spotify, which was their first album to hit this milestone. ‘Eastside’ was certified 5x platinum in the United States with 5 million units sold, as well as being certified 3x platinum in the United Kingdom with 1.8 million units sold. Halsey surpasses 4.1 billion streams on Spotify, making them the 6th most streamed female this decade.


‘Be Kind’ celebrates its one-year anniversary on May the 1st. Halsey wins ‘Songwriter Of The Year’ at BMI pop awards, which is a massive achievement for any artist. Billboard also ranks Halsey the 14th biggest female artist of the decade during this month. ‘Nightmare’ turns two on May the 17th! That song is the definition of a bad b*tch anthem. They surpass 1 billion streams on Spotify across every single one of their songs. One billion!


Hopeless Fountain Kingdom turned four on June the 2nd. June the 10th showed us the release of About Face’s “summer” line. We had no idea what Halsey had in store for us, but we did not expect a whole album announcement. If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power seemingly came out of nowhere, which only made the excitement even more real. Every track from Badlands was certified gold or higher in the US, making Halsey the third female to achieve this in history. Badlands also surpassed 6 million units sold worldwide.


July was massive for Halsey and their fans. At the start of the month, she announced both the dates for the album and the movie; If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power. Then comes the 19th when the birth of their son, Ender, was posted to Instagram. Ender was born on the 14th, and our hearts were bursting with pure joy. On the 27th, About Face collaborated with Dickies and released some adorable bags. Their hit song ‘Graveyard’ was certified 2x platinum in the United States with over 2 million units sold. Hopeless Fountain Kingdom was certified gold in the United Kingdom selling over 100,000 units. Finally, ‘Alone’ surpasses 200 million streams on Spotify too.


If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power was released, both the movie (25th) and the album (27th). She was quick to push the promo, rightfully so, and performed If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power on the 29th through Moment House. This album breathed life into our lungs from the first note we heard of it. ‘3am’ surpassed 40 million streams, also, ‘Not Afraid Anymore’ surpassed 80 million streams, both on Spotify. With the new album drop, it pushed Halsey to gain more than 14 billion streams on Spotify too. Badlands had its five-year anniversary and Badlands (Live From Webster Hall) celebrated its one year, both on the 28th.


About Face dropped another new line called “Fractal” on the 14th. After days and weeks of begging, Halsey releases If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, the movie, on Moment House for 48 hours. That movie is everything we ever needed, and will ever need in the future. On the 22nd, it was announced that she would be performing on Saturday Night Live in early October. Hopeless Fountain Kingdom picked up more than 1.9 billion streams on Spotify and Halsey themselves surpassed 31 billion streams in total worldwide.


‘Without Me’ celebrated its three-years anniversary on the 4th. On October the 7th If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power was released on HBOMAX, and this time, it’s here to stay! Halsey then returned to Saturday Night Live for the fifth time on the 10th and performed ‘I am Not A Woman, I’m A God’ alongside Lindsey Buckingham. About Face also released a “fall” range, which included darker autumnal shades, perfect for Halloween. Halsey was then nominated for “Best Alternative Artist” by the EMAs and Manic surpassed 3.3 billion streams on Spotify.


As we all creep closer to the end of the year, we were hoping Halsey would drop a holiday collection in their About Face Beauty brand. Come the 4th of November, our wish was granted. About Face releases their “holiday” range, full of shimmers and glitters to keep us festive. I Would Leave Me If I Could celebrated its one-year anniversary on the 10th. ‘Closer’ was certified 14x platinum in the United States, selling over 14 million units. Last but certainly not least, Halsey was nominated for a GRAMMY!

BTS performed in LA, and of course, Halsey went to show her support. Manic spent a total of 95 weeks on the Billboard 200, which makes it the longest-charting album by a female artist this decade. She was honored with an “innovator” award by the NMEs. Hangout Fest is one of the biggest festivals in the States, and Halsey, on the 6th, announced they’d be headlining next year! Alongside other big artists, it’s shaping up to be a fantastic festival. The United Kingdom has its fair share of festivals too, one being Reading and Leeds Fest, and guess what?! On the 8th, Halsey announced she’d be headlining that too! Festival season is blessed to have Halsey join the lineups.

Safe to say it was a very busy year for Halsey, and what a way to round it off! With the state the world has been in, to achieve so much this year is legendary. Everything from new releases, old songs hitting new milestones and even the birth of Ender, we are big Halsey fans and are super excited to see what the future holds!
