Hey, bookbees! Today we’re excited to be talking about The Night She Went Missing by Kristen Bird. This 2022 release about a missing teenager and the families in her small town grabbed our attention. Here are our five reasons why thriller lovers should read The Night She Went Missing!
Content Warnings: sexual assault, cancer, anxiety, panic attacks, death of a parent, coma
Summary: An intriguing and twisty domestic suspense about loyalty and deceit in a tight-knit Texas community where parents are known to behave badly and people are not always who they appear to be.
Emily, a popular but bookish prep school senior, goes missing after a night out with friends. She was last seen leaving a party with Alex, a football player with a dubious reputation. But no one is talking.
Now three mothers, Catherine, Leslie and Morgan, friends turned frenemies, have their lives turned upside down as they are forced to look to their own children—and each other’s—for answers to questions they don’t want to ask.
Each mother is sure she knows who is responsible, but they all have their own secrets to keep and reputations to protect. And the lies they tell themselves and each other may just have the potential to be lethal in this riveting debut.
Like any good thriller, this book is fast-paced. From the first pages, we were sucked into this mystery, trying to piece together what happened to Emily. From there, we cover many months leading up to this moment from the perspective of members of the community. There was never a dull moment, and there was always drama!
An Exciting Setting And Background
Another reason why we enjoyed this book was the beautiful small town setting! The fact that everyone knew each other added to the suspense and shock factor as the characters each uncovered secrets from other families. The intricate history of the town made it feel like its inhabitants were real and it sucked you into their story.
An Interesting Cast Of Characters
Something we love here at The Honey POP is relatable and interesting characters. The Night She Went Missing is packed full of many characters, each unique in their own way. From Catherine to Leslie to Morgan, each faced many problems and dealt with them differently. We could relate to Catherine’s grief, to Leslie’s struggle to be the overachiever, and Morgan who just was trying to hold it all together. Relating to these characters made the plot twists even more shocking and it felt that we were experiencing these events with the characters themselves.
This Could Definitely Be A TV Show
We recommend The Night She Went Missing to fans of Big Little Lies, and we could also see this book being adapted to a tv show! We can picture the opening scene with Emily now. We’d be very interested in seeing how each character would be portrayed.
An Intricately Plotted Mystery
Thriller lovers will enjoy piecing together this interwoven mystery. We were constantly on the lookout for clues and hints as the story unfolded. By the end, we came to a satisfying conclusion and enjoyed looking back and picking up on the previous foreshadowing. How could we miss those clues?! We might have said “oh my gosh” and “ohhhhh” a couple of times 😂.
