Finally, festival season is coming back to us! Even if you’re not planning on going to any shows, looking at big festival lineups is one of our favorite ways to discover new music. New York’s iconic Governors Ball recently unveiled their 2022 lineup and all we can say is “wow.” From rappers like Jack Harlow to pop-rockers like Glass Animals, this roster is seriously stacked with some of the biggest stars in the industry.
But above all, we might be most excited to see a handful of our favorite female artists returning to the stage and getting to introduce their music to a whole new crowd who might not be familiar with their work. We’ve been following some of these ladies since their debuts, and we’re so proud of how far they’ve come! Let’s celebrate the women of this year’s Gov Ball with this list of five of our faves.
Halsey’s life has done a complete 180 in the past few years, from moving into a metallic rock sound and making a movie with If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power to giving birth to her first child, Ender! They even got to show off their incredible stage presence on Saturday Night Live this year, recruiting Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac for a tender performance of ‘Darling.’ Whether it’s the moody angst of Badlands, the baroque romance of hopeless fountain kingdom, the kaleidoscopic ambition of Manic, or the dualistic confidence of IICHLIWP, Halsey is constantly giving their all to any project they release. So it’s no surprise she’s one of this year’s Gov Ball headliners! Her appearance will count as the New York show for their Love And Power Tour, so you really can’t miss this.
Us when Chelsea Cutler wants anything: ‘You Can Have It!’ Chelsea is one of the hottest rising pop acts, and once you hear her fluttery voice and vulnerable lyrics, you’ll understand exactly why. Her new track, ‘the lifeboat’s empty!’ is the perfect example of her versatility – the lyrics can get heavy, but the song is still light enough to listen to on a sunny day or jam out to while you’re doing housework. It’s such a fun way to get fans hyped up for the upcoming deluxe version of her When I Close My Eyes album and we can’t wait to hear it live with the rest of the new deluxe tracks.
I’m so excited to continue the When I Close My Eyes era with the deluxe album and start it off with one of my favorite songs I’ve ever made – ‘the lifeboat’s empty!’ I had a lot of fun making this one and think it’s going to absolutely go off on tour.
Led by mastermind frontwoman Michelle Zauner, the GRAMMY-nominated Japanese Breakfast is redefining the indie pop-rock sound we all know and love. They’re taking retro-tinged bedroom pop to another level while they take the world by storm! Their uplifting energy while performing is so infectious – just check out their recent performance on The Ellen Show if you don’t wanna take our word for it. We stand by the philosophy that the best way to start off your morning is with some Japanese Breakfast.
She’s crazy but we like that! ‘Daisy’ was one of the biggest songs on TikTok during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we’re so happy Ashnikko is getting the recognition she deserves. She manages to be confident, provocative, and vulnerable all at once and that’s part of why she’s one of alternative pop’s most exciting new artists. Her latest double single release, ‘Panic Attacks In Paradise’ and ‘Maggots,’ shows off her versatility so perfectly, offering a sensitive lament and a fiery anthem of empowerment. Her set will be unreal!
Aly & AJ
If you didn’t grow up singing ‘Potential Breakup Song’ and ‘Like Whoa’ everywhere you went, were you really a 2000s kid? We think not! But even if you haven’t followed Aly & AJ since the beginning, you have time to catch up on their decade-spanning career before they hit the Gov Ball stage with some of their biggest hits. From their pop-rock roots to their sunny new indie sound, there are bound to be at least a few songs in their catalog that you’ll fall in love with.
