In honor of his father Jim Croce’s 50th anniversary of the release of You Don’t Mess Around With Jim, A.J. Croce and SIRIUS XM (The Bridge) have teamed up for a special five-day event, where A.J. was the guest DJ. During this time, he shared stories, music, inspiration, and everything in between.
In addition to that, A.J. is also on tour for his concert series Croce Plays Croce, where he covers his father’s debut album You Don’t Mess Around With Jim. You can check where A.J. will be stopping here. It’s something you definitely wouldn’t want to miss.
In celebration of the album’s iconic anniversary, as well as the performances by A.J. we’ve compromised our five favorite tracks off the album. Enjoy!
‘You Don’t Mess Around with Jim’
We’re starting off with the title track! We couldn’t have mentioned our favorite tracks without mentioning ‘You Don’t Mess Around With Jim.’ The track tells the story of this very strong man named Jim, who is invincible until a man named Slim shows up. The chorus is very, very catchy.
‘New York’s Not My Home’
‘New York’s Not My Home’ is one of those songs that feel like they come and go in a blink of an eye. Every track on You Don’t Mess Around With Jim tells different stories, and ‘New York’s Not My Home’ is well, like the name says, not feeling like you’re at home, where you currently are. Our favorite part from the track is how he sings, “‘Cause I know that I’ve gotta get outta here / I’m so alone,” how his voice picks up, making us hit rewind every time.
‘Photographs & Memories’
‘Photographs and Memories’ is such a lovely, sad song. “Memories that come at night/Take me to another time/Back to a happier day/When I called you mine” are our favorite lyrics from the track, and it perfectly describes the aftermath feeling of a past relationship that you always yearn for. And though it is the shortest track on our list, we think it’s the perfect length to convey the story it’s telling.
‘Operator (That’s Not the Way It Feels)’
Though the lyrics for ‘Operator (That’s Not The Way It Feels)’ seem repetitive, we think that’s what makes the track as memorable as it is. It makes you feel the emotions more intensely and expresses the lyrics in more of a pleading/helpless way. Plus, it’s such a sad track and proves that Jim Croce is good at storytelling, making it probably our favorite Croce song.
‘Time in a Bottle’
The enticing opening chords for ‘Time in a Bottle’ open the track for the listener, preparing them for a lovely song. “If I could make days last forever / If words could make wishes come true / I’d save every day like a treasure, and then / Again, I would spend them with you.” Have we heard any sweeter words than these? No. In the month of love, we think this is the perfect song to add to your Valentine’s Day playlists.
