So You Just Turned 20 Huh? SZA Gets That
No one really prepares you for your 20s. Sure, everyone talks about how fun and freeing it is, how much independence you gain. You’re not a teenager but not quite a full-fledged adult, and you have a chance to make your way in the world. No one talks about how making your way in the world can be scary. Some of us in our 20s have it all (seemingly) figured out, some of us are still trying to get there, and some of us are stuck somewhere in between. It can be confusing and stressful amidst all the fun and independence. ’20 Something’ is a great track to start off this journey through our 20s.
Hopin’ my 20 somethings won’t end
Hopin’ to keep the rest of my friends
Prayin’ the 20 somethings don’t kill me, don’t kill me
SZA really knew what she was talking about with this one. Yes, you can enjoy your 20s and make amazing memories, but if you’re struggling, it’s valid, too.
21? More Like Twenty-Fun Hah? Hah????
Do you know what else they don’t tell you about your 20s? No one appreciates your puns. Whatever, it’s fine. We’re fine.
Okay, anyway, moving on. Now, this next track is not explicitly about being 21, but we still think it captures an important experience.
When the night is over
Don’t call me up, I’m already under
I get a little bit alone sometimes and I miss you again
Part of navigating your 20s means navigating adult friendships and relationships, and it can all feel a bit lonely sometimes, especially if you’re on a different path or find yourself moving on to different friends/people. It’s okay to grow out of relationships and connect with new people – it’s all a part of life and finding your way through the world, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t always hurt. Gracie Abrams captures those feelings in this song, even if it isn’t about the age of 21 specifically.
We Don’t Know About You, But We Miss 22
How could we write this journey through your 20s without including this song from Ms. Taylor Swift?? It’s an iconic anthem for all the 22-year-olds!
Everything will be alright if
We just keep dancing like we’re
Simple, but effective. This track proves that your 20s don’t have to be all doom and gloom. Yeah, it can suck, but those days of dancing and laughing and enjoying yourself with your friends, making memories, and living your best life? That’s what life is all about! So put on your favorite outfits, get dressed up for no reason, be spontaneous! Do it all and feel the warmth of life. It’s too short to go through it without having some fun.
23 Is Hard, But We’ll Always Have Music
You gotta find balance in your 20s. For those of us who have been 23, you remember what that was like. It’s a weird age to be, trying to balance fun and work, friends and self-care, it’s all about balance, and it can be hard. We don’t think you have to lose out on the immaturity or the child-like wonder and humor – that should all still be there, but there’s a time and place. Once you figure out how to act your age but also leave room for your inner kid, life feels pretty good. Blink-182 has never really led us astray before, so it’s no surprise that we had to include this song.
Nobody likes you when you’re twenty-three
And you still act like you’re in freshman year
What the hell is wrong with me?
My friends say I should act my age
What’s my age again?
24 Staring In Your Face
At least it isn’t 25. Yet.
We’re really not trying to be all doom and gloom on this journey, we promise it’s not all bad. It really isn’t. As people who have been through and are in their 20s, we understand the struggles, the sunshine moments, and everything in between. It can get mentally overwhelming, though.
I don’t wanna think about it
And the worst part of it is
That I don’t hear from my friends anymore
Yeah, everything slows down by 24
The size of my bad thoughts broke down my door
Shoutout to Awsten Knight because this is how it feels sometimes. You try to stay positive, you don’t wanna think about all the doom and gloom, but sometimes it’s all just waiting for you right outside that mental door, and that’s okay. Trying to navigate friendships, career searches, school, family, social life, and everything in between can be overwhelming, and ‘Dizzy’ feels like the best way to describe it.
Is 25 Too Early For A Life Crisis?
Woke up twenty-five years late to the party
I don’t wanna live in my head anymore
I don’t know how many more I’ve got
But I’ll be waitin’ for forever if I’m waitin’ for a better day
We love love love The Band CAMINO, and we love love love this song. It’s not quite the same vibe as ’22,’ but ‘EVERYBODYDIES’ pushes that same idea of your 20s not needing to be all bad. We’re all gonna die one day, might as well enjoy the life we got. No more waiting around to enjoy our lives, we’re taking charge and doing it! Sometimes life wins, that’s inevitable, but sometimes you have those days that make it all worth it. (And okay, maybe 25 makes us feel like we’re flying towards 30, but honestly? 30 doesn’t seem so bad.)
Hurtling Towards 26 And We’re A Little More Prepared
Not only that, but Lauv’s ’26’ seemed like a great way to wrap up this journey through our 20s.
And I’ll never admit it
But I wish that I was younger
Yeah, 26 and I’m rich
How the hell did it come to this?
While Lauv is diving into his personal experiences with ’26’ and how his rise to stardom affected him, we think it’s still a track that can be relevant to the experience of your 20s. It’s okay to look back and wonder how you got here, whether it’s looking back from a positive or negative place in the present. The older we get, the more we learn how beneficial it is to get vulnerable and really understand and accept our feelings, it makes a world of difference.
It’s hard summing up being your 20s in just a few words, a few phrases, a few experiences. This is definitely not an exhaustive list of all the songs that capture young adult life, but we think it’s a pretty good start. Your 20s are happy, free, and confusing in the best way, and we wouldn’t have it any other way tbh.
