Welcome back, book-bees! You’re just in time to go on a getaway with us to the Gold Coast – Santa Barbara, to be exact – where the skies are clear, the sun is thawing out our frozen winter bodies, and there’s no shortage of drama – or cats! It’s time to take a dip amidst the rolling waves and escape all our life stresses among the pages of our latest book review: The Summer Getaway by Susan Mallery!
Book Summary: Single mom Robyn Caldwell needs a new plan for her future. She has always put her family first. Now, with her kids grown, she yearns for a change. But what can she do when her daughter has become the most demanding bride ever, her son won’t even consider college, her best friend is on the brink of marital disaster and her ex is making a monumentally bad decision that could ruin everything? Take a vacation, of course. Press reset. When her great-aunt Lillian invites her to Santa Barbara for the summer, Robyn hops on the first plane to sunny California. But it’s hard to get away when you’re the heart of the family. One by one, everyone she loves follows her across the country. Somehow, their baggage doesn’t feel as heavy in the sun-drenched, mishmash mansion. The more time Robyn spends with free-spirited Lillian, the more possibilities she sees—for dreams, love, family. She can have everything she ever wanted, if only she can muster the courage to take a chance on herself.
One thing Susan Mallery has always done well is how beautifully and effortlessly she brings her characters to life. She has a way of making you relate to every character, tugging on your heartstrings in the process, and The Summer Getaway is no exception! We fell in love with Robyn, Harlow, Austin, Mason, Lillian, and all of the other characters (some more than others) almost immediately. We got hooked on their personalities and became too intrigued by their day-to-day lives to put the book down until we read the very last page.
We adore the emotional aspect of this story and all the feelings Susan was able to provoke in us with just a few words as the characters developed and the storyline played out among the pages. The Summer Getaway emphasizes the importance of family (more so not taking them for granted), communication, understanding, and self-awareness. Additionally, watching some of the characters grow up and become a better version of themselves was heartwarming and evoked a sense of pride in us. We could not get enough of this story: with every chapter, every character, every snippet of drama, we waited with bated breath to see what would happen next as relationships blossomed, wilted, and everything in between.
Overall, The Summer Getaway was the perfect mental escape for us, and we enjoyed getting lost in its pages. We’re sad to say goodbye to all the characters we fell in love with, but maybe just maybe, one day, we’ll get a sequel, and we’ll get to see where all our beloved characters are in the future (please, please, please!).
The Summer Getaway releases on March 15th, and you can pre-order your copy here!
