If you love a good summer rom-com, this one’s for you! From Jennifer Dugan, the author of faves like Hot Dog Girl, Some Girls Do, and Verona Comics, comes a new queer rom-com featuring love-themed ice cream, tropes galore, sweet friendships, and lots of road trip shenanigans. Melt With You is at the top of our TBR, and trust us, you need to add it to yours ASAP!
Summary: Fallon and Chloe used to be best friends, but last summer they hooked up right before Chloe left for college, and after a series of misunderstandings they are now not speaking to one another. A year later, Chloe’s back home from school, and Fallon is doing everything in her power to avoid her–which is especially difficult because their moms own a business together, a gourmet ice cream truck where both girls work.
When their moms have the opportunity to make a presentation to some venture capitalists in Texas–something that could seriously expand their business and solve all their money problems to boot–it’s up to Fallon to work a series of food truck festivals across the country. But she can’t do it alone, and Chloe is the only one available to help. As tensions heat up again between the two, will Fallon be able to keep her cool?

Ice Cream Scoops
Melt With You follows Fallon and Chloe––two former best friends, on a road trip bound for a food truck festival (and certain disaster). Fallon and Chloe’s moms own the ice cream truck and are lifelong best friends and always hoped their daughters would end up the same. But when Fallon and Chloe hooked up, and Chloe ghosted, it threw a wrench in the moms’ dream and the girls’ friendship. So as they set out on the road trip to help their moms out, the circumstances set up are juicy and grab you from the first chapter. Despite their tension and miscommunication, it’s obvious that the two girls have a deep love for each other, even after everything that’s torn them apart. You can’t help but root for them!
As they set out on the road trip, they run into surprises along the way––both expected and not, like chocolate chips and cookie bits in vanilla swirl. Chloe has a secret planned route with the goal of winning Fallon over and resuming their friendship, and the hijinks that result from it are funny, heartfelt, and sometimes unfortunate.
We love a good trope, and this one brings it! The relationship between Fallon and Chloe is peak childhood best friends to enemies to lovers, and we ate it up like an ice cream cone on a summer day drenched with chocolate syrup. Plus, with the forced proximity, miscommunication, and extra guilty pleasure of oh-my-god-there’s-only-one-bed, the drama is the perfect mix of rom-com goodness, just like stirring up your melty ice cream.
You always need that extra dash of magic that makes everything come together like toppings on a sundae, and this book brought the rainbow sprinkles. Melt With You features great bi-girl representation in refreshing and fun ways. Plus, the friendships Fallon has with Jami and Prisha are adorable and such a great example of what a healthy friendship should be.
Not only are the two main characters relatable and fun to follow, but the side characters they run into are also interesting and often hilariously entertaining, like the two women who own the slightly sketchy campground they stay at one night.
And we can’t forget the main event––the ice cream. Fallon and Chloe’s moms’ business is rom-com themed, and the menu sounds amazing. With original concoctions like the “Just Whelmed Waffle Cone,” “It’s Not You It’s Tea,” and the “Malt In Our Stars” (a strawberry milkshake with dark chocolate fudge and broken heart candies), this book had us craving ice cream the whole way through.
Cherry On Top
Lastly, Melt With You charmed us from the first page and made us that much more excited for summer. There’s nothing better than a good YA summer contemporary, and this book brought back memories of all our faves! It’s brimming with sweet and salty charm, and it’s an overall great time.
Melt With You by Jennifer Dugan is out May 16th and is available to preorder now!
