If there’s one thing we love about music is how much it helps express feelings. And some artists just have a gift for putting what we feel into words, it almost feels like they can read our minds. With that in mind, we thought we’d put together a list of songs about handling difficult times in life. Grab your tissues, blankets, and headphones, and let’s dive in!
poptropicaslutz! – ‘WW3’
Gen Z emo-pop duo poptropicaslutz! released their latest music video for their single ‘WW3,’ and we are in love! In the lyrics, Nick Crawford and Christian Cicilia speak about a relationship that’s rocky and difficult, but as long as they’re fine, “it could be world war 3 outside/ the sky could fall/ we’ll be alright.”
We love the 90s vibe poptropicaslutz! bring to their music, and this video showing the boys performing in crowded spaces like a limo and a small green room is also *chef’s kiss*. Also, filming it in the 4:3 ratio so it looks like something we’d see on TV during the 90s and 2000s was a nice touch too, we loved it! And we can’t wait to see what they do on their new EP, just in case the world ends, set to release on May 6.
Scooped Up! – ‘Best Days’
Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard the phrase, “these are the best days of your life, so you better enjoy them.” We’ve all heard that at least once during our younger days. And let’s be honest, it doesn’t always feel like the best days of our lives. In fact, sometimes it feels like the complete opposite. And that’s the exact sentiment Scooped Up! invokes in their new single ‘Best Days.’
This pop-punk coming-of-age anthem makes us feel understood at the current stage of our lives while also bringing some nostalgic elements to the mix. And by that, we mean both the band’s sound and the visuals for their music video, which looks like it came straight out of a 90s movie, which we appreciate very much.
Jacob Sartorius – ‘Worth It’
We can always count on Jacob Sartorius’ music to feel like the warm hug we need. His vulnerability and willingness to share both good moments and struggles with his audience are characteristics that make him one of the best humans ever. And his latest single is further proof of that. ‘Worth It’, in Jacob’s words, is a song “about embracing life for what it is and being honest with where [he’s] at.”
We dare you to say that’s not one of the most relatable things you’ve ever heard. And that’s the beautiful thing about Jacob’s music, we never feel alone when we listen to it. His songs are constant reminders that we are not alone in our struggles, and there’s always someone there to help us.
Benedict Cork – ‘If These Walls Could Talk’
Before you listen to this song, you may want to get some tissues. Benedict Cork really said, “I’m taking people on the most emotional journey ever with this song,” and then he did! And we loved it. Our eyes are still full of tears, but we loved it. ‘If These Walls Could Talk’ is one big tribute to Benedict‘s childhood home, filled with nostalgic memories that got us in our feels.
The lyrics and music video show us the journey of self-discovery Benedict went through and that many of us can relate to. Going back to the place where you grew up can be an emotional moment, and we’re glad someone put that feeling into words. Or rather, a song. And if you think ‘If These Walls Could Talk’ was good, we cannot stress this enough: you have to listen to Benedict Cork’s EP of the same name. Every single song in it slaps.
Andrew Cushin – ‘Runaway’
Andrew Cushin really came for our hearts with his new EP, You Don’t Belong. Each of the four songs in it deserves a whole article, but for now, we’ll focus on the closing track, ‘Runaway.’ It’s actually crazy to know that Andrew wrote this as a challenge inspired by the story of Noel Gallagher writing a single for Oasis in ten minutes.
If you’ve ever felt like you were an outsider who was “forgotten” by the world, we won’t lie, this song will hit hard. But it is comforting knowing that we aren’t alone in that feeling. And Andrew’s melodic voice just works so well in this song, you’ll want to listen to it on repeat for as long as you can.
One Armed Joey – ‘Mirrors’
We’re closing this list with one of our favorite new pop-punk groups, One Armed Joey. Specifically, today we’re talking about the second single from their recently announced album, Happiness To Me, ‘Mirrors’. And let us tell ya, this one got us hooked.
You know how we all kind of spend our lives waiting to turn 21 because everyone makes it look like the perfect age? ‘Mirrors’ is all about life at 21. The lyrics tell a story through the eyes of someone who got to 21 and now is wondering, “now what?” And if you don’t relate to that feeling, just know you will soon.
You have reached the end of this article, yay! We hope you’ve enjoyed our list and maybe found a song you relate to. If you’d like to chat about these songs, tweet us @TheHoneyPOP! Or, you can find us on Instagram and Facebook.
