15 Of Our Favorite Gilded, Glamorous Looks From The 2022 Met Gala

One of the biggest nights in both fashion and entertainment is the annual Met Gala in New York, and the 2022 ball did not disappoint. With the theme of Gilded Glamour, countless celebrities hit the Met steps a la Gossip Girl as the whole world watched in awe. Physically, we were at home in our pajamas. Mentally, we were Blair Waldorf and her friends sitting on the stairs, judging everyone’s outfits.

So What Exactly IS Gilded Glamour?

The Gilded Age of the late 1800s was a time when the northern U.S. economy was flourishing, so the fashion was full of grandeur and sophistication. But notably, this was also a time when the gap between the rich and poor was growing – hence the idea that the period was “gilded” rather than genuinely great. Railroads and factories were popping up across the country, and middle-class laborers often got hurt at work. Women were fighting for the right to vote, and the rich were all dolled up in corsets, waistcoats, bustles, and headpieces.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the best looks that followed the theme!

Alicia Keys

Alicia was in her ‘Empire State Of Mind’ when she put on this Ralph Lauren cape and dress, and it totally paid off! New York was one of the hotspots of growth and culture during the Gilded Age, so it made sense to pay homage to the city and its skyline that popped up during that time. There were over 200,000 crystals handsewn onto the cape, which astonished us.

Anderson .Paak

Yes, part of why we’re adding Anderson to our list is so we can show you this very important video of him having the time of his life before even approaching the Met steps. Don’t judge us! But in all seriousness, we loved the contrast between Anderson’s floral jacket and leather pants, which mirrors the contrast between the upper and lower classes, as well as the northern and southern parts of the U.S., during the Gilded Age.

Billie Eilish

Billie teamed up with Gucci for a totally Gilded look using entirely recycled fabric, even down to her shoes. They absolutely nailed the silhouette and aesthetic, partly thanks to their inspiration from John Singer Sargent’s 1885 painting Madame Paul Poirson. We kinda wish the lace sleeves were black to add some edge to the look, along with her choker and inky hair, but she was definitely one of the most on-theme stars of the night. She knows how to Met Gala!

Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds

We at THP always love a good power couple, and Blake and Ryan are pretty much the definition of that. They’re always so supportive of each other, and the prime example is their Met Gala outfits. As co-chairs, they knew they had a responsibility to steal the show, so that’s exactly what they did. Blake’s dynamic Versace dress took inspiration from the Empire State Building, the constellation-painted ceilings at Grand Central Station, and the Statue of Liberty as the ultimate homage to the landmark city that is New York. Meanwhile, Ryan’s velvet suit looked polished while also letting Blake’s gown be the main focus.

And Ryan’s reaction to the grand reveal?? Same, Ryan. Same.

Conan Gray

Many moons and Mets ago, back in May 2018, Conan made us a solemn promise that upon his invitation to the Met Gala, he would go all out with his ensemble. So how did he do? Let’s take a look…

In our humble opinion, he rocked it! He was totally shining in this Valentino look, from the embellished tulle sections to the “gilded” pants and collar. From the moment we saw his outfit, our jaws dropped, and we instantly fell in love. He brought Gilded aesthetics into the modern era, and the results are absolutely amazing.

It’s an honor to attend my first MET Gala dressed by Valentino. I wanted to create a look that felt simultaneously Gilded Age, yet modern Valentino. My main goal with Pierpaolo and Katie Qian was to capture the message of gilded age elegance and glamor. Above all, I wanted a cape.

Jack Harlow

If Met Gala attendees were assigned a seat on a flight based on their outfits, Jack would certainly be in ‘First Class’ thanks to this slick Givenchy look based on the classic waistcoat. From the unique lapel to the rich chocolate shade, this outfit really stood apart from the usual suits we see on the red carpet. He got to show off his signature charm and charisma, all while getting some amazing promo in for his Come Home The Kids Miss You album, which we’ll be streaming nonstop once it comes out this Friday!

Let’s just say if we met Jack in this look, we’d react very similarly to Mindy Kaling…

Lenny Kravitz

It’s become something of a meme that most male Met Gala attendees wear all-black looks every year, but Lenny Kravitz really showed everyone how it’s done with his outfit! He rocked lace and a corset in a way unlike we’ve ever seen and proved exactly why he’s regarded as a rock ‘n’ roll fashion icon. This was such a chic look that played off the Gilded aesthetic with a modern flair.

Lizzo looked simply regal in a black and gold look from Thom Browne, who absolutely understood the assignment. Everything about this look hit the right note, from the gold motifs to the corset-style dress. It’s a truly special outfit that will continue to live in our minds rent-free, and it’s ‘About Damn Time’ for Lizzo to be recognized as the style icon she is. She even had the perfect date for the red carpet: a $55,000 flute.

Maude Apatow

Maude gave us all sorts of Old Hollywood glam with a Miu Miu gown that perfectly showed off her figure, playing off the corsets and fitted looks that some people wore during the Gilded Era while offering a modern flair with the sheer panels. And decked out with Cartier jewels, she looks like she belongs in the Met Museum herself. This look made us feel utter euphoria and definitely stole the show.

Megan Thee Stallion

It’s a pretty good week to be Megan Thee Stallion – it started off in her hometown of Houston, Texas, where she received a key to the city and the honor of May 2nd being named as Megan Thee Stallion Day! Then she hopped on a plane to NYC to make our jaws drop with this golden Moschino look. It was elegant and sleek, and the feathery capelet played on the feather accents that many upper-class outfits had in the Gilded era.

We’ll never shut up about how incredible this Normani look by Christian Siriano is. It played on the voluminous silhouettes of the Gilded Age with a modern, fresh twist. And did you catch how her exposed stomach replicated the slim effect of a Gilded corset against the fluffy sleeves and skirt? Simply brilliant. Who do we need to bribe to make sure Christian designs every future Normani outfit?

Olivia Rodrigo

Our girl Liv played up the “gilded” part of the Gilded Glamour challenge with a shimmery dress by Versace! The slim shape gives us the same vibe as a corset, and though we kinda wish she wore a corset like she’s rocked in the past few months, we can’t deny that she looked absolutely stunning in this outfit. The off-shoulder straps and long gloves give us totally Gilded vibes. The purple and butterflies also intertwine with the aesthetic of her SOUR album, which we love.

Quannah Chasinghorse

What many people overlook about the Gilded Age is how Native Americans were treated during that time – Indigenous lands were stolen, and Indigenous people were forced to assimilate into white society. Indigenous model Quannah Chasinghorse made the ultimate statement with her Prabal Gurung look, which pays tribute to her heritage while also being a statement piece that played into the beading and voluminous silhouettes of the Gilded era.

From the fitted, beaded bodice to the fluffy tulle skirt, ROSALÍA looked absolutely gorgeous in her Givenchy gown. It took so many elements of Gilded fashion and turned them into something so modern and sophisticated. ROSALÍA was glowing all evening, and we hope her look gets the recognition it deserves. This is the stuff of dreams!
