Have you been looking for a band who have the right mix of melancholy and hopefulness? Or are you trying to find an EP that makes you feel like the main character in a coming-of-age movie? Well, Gallipoli is the band for you, and their new EP On Vodno has blown us away. We can see big things coming from this duo.
The indie/alt duo, currently based in California, released their debut EP On Vodno last week and we’ve not turned it off since. The four-track EP was mixed by Peter Katis of The National, so if you like the vibe of them, Bon Iver or Taylor‘s Folklore, and want to further explore indie/folk, this one is for you. Aman and Lucas have created a piece of work that has heart and soul. They’ve also really leaned into aesthetics that encompass their sound perfectly, even in their approach to lyric videos like the one below for ‘My My.’
Get Them On A Soundtrack ASAP
The whole EP is very cinematic in its sound. Think of a The Perks of Being A Wallflower type sequence. Hanging out the sunroof and gliding through a tunnel. The awakening to live in the moment and appreciate every second. It’s the moment of great realization when the main character makes peace with the fact that things have changed but they’re going to be okay. It’s sitting in the back of the cab in the rain and pretending you’re in a music video or running barefoot through a forest. We’ve truly fallen in love with the feeling of ‘Blurry Mess’ and the epic yet understated sound Gallipoli has created with this EP.
They Know The Vibe
We would say that their vibe fits into a film soundtrack but they’ve done it themselves (as they absolutely should, we love self-awareness.) If you want to get a better feel for the type of songwriting and music the band draws inspiration from, you should check out their playlist Music For Film on Spotify. It’s full of artists we love here at THP (No surprise there!) including the likes of Brian Eno, Radiohead, and Vampire Weekend.
The boys wrote the EP in the hills of Macedonia which is where the title On Vodno comes from. The band itself in fact is very multicultural with family backgrounds in India, Turkey, New Zealand, Belgium, and Dubai. They are even paying homage to their ancestry even in name, remembering the Battle of Gallipoli. This is such an exciting band and such a strong release for their first-ever EP. We can’t wait to see what they produce next and hope it’s equally as dreamy.
