Doja Cat has brought us to the ‘Streets,’ Planet Her, and a ‘Wild Beach,’ and she’s adding one more stop to her travel itinerary with the flashy ‘Vegas,’ which appears on the soundtrack of this year’s ELVIS – a biopic about the rock ‘n’ roll legend himself, directed by Baz Luhrmann! We were already excited to check out this film, but adding Doja into the mix is making us even more hype, and it should be making you even more hype as well.
‘Vegas’ is oozing with confidence, finesse, and Doja’s signature rap-pop crossover flair. And the chorus and verses include a sample from a song you might recognize from Elvis’ discography: ‘Hound Dog!’ The original song talks about a sleazy person, calling them out and shrugging them off as “nothing but a hound dog.”
But did you know Elvis didn’t sing the original? Big Mama Thornton did, and that’s the version Doja borrows from. Big Mama found success with the song four years before Elvis and topped R&B charts for seven weeks. Her version is still famous for her raw, emotion-filled vocals and the power behind the messages she was delivering, and we hope ‘Vegas’ helps Big Mama get more of the recognition she deserves.
We don’t know about you, but we’ve been eagerly anticipating ‘Vegas’ ever since Doja gave us a little preview during her Coachella set earlier this year. She even brought out the ELVIS film’s own Big Mama Thornton, Shonka, to perform it with her! It was such a fun moment and if you got to see it live… we’re totally not jealous… why would we be jealous…?
We love that Doja gave Big Mama Thornton her flowers in such a fun way! What did you think of ‘Vegas’ and the ‘Hound Dog’ sample?
