Despite being fairly new to the pop music scene, Olivia Rodrigo has managed to make a huge name for herself. Not only has she released some incredible music, but Olivia also sold out her first world tour in a matter of minutes and released her driving home 2 u film with Disney+. Olivia has seen so much success in the last year and we at THP certainly can’t wait to see what she does next!

Despite having a small discography, Olivia has proven that she really has range and her debut album truly had zero skips. With the one-year anniversary of SOUR coming right around the corner, here are five of our favorite Olivia Rodrigo songs that you need to add to your playlist ASAP.
Shortly after blessing our ears with the SOUR album, Olivia released the first track, ’brutal,’ as a single and it absolutely rocked our worlds. Using loud instrumentation and angry lyrics, the song perfectly encapsulates what it feels like to be an angsty eighteen year old and really shows off Olivia’s edgier side. You can also really hear Olivia’s pop-rock influences on this track, and it feels really reminiscent of artists like Paramore and Avril Lavigne.
Despite only being 2 minutes and 56 seconds long, ’happier’ really packs an emotional punch. While all of Olivia’s songs are impeccably written, this song in particular really highlights her lyrical capabilities, emphasised further by simpler instrumentation that really allows you to take in the emotion Olivia is putting out. However, it is also a very, very sad song, so make sure you avoid adding it to your hype playlist and definitely get the tissues ready before you listen.
Have you ever been stalking a celebrity or a friend’s instagram and just wished that you could have what they have? We’ve all been there! There’s absolutely no shame in it, even Olivia Rodrigo herself has done it! Being the ninth track on SOUR, ’jealousy, jealousy’ really stands out and is painfully relatable for anyone that has grown up on social media. This song shows a different sort of vulnerability from Olivia and is perfect for belting the top of your lungs.
‘The Rose Song’
This is one of Olivia’s lesser known songs, but at THP, we can’t stop listening to it. Coming from the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series soundtrack, ’The Rose Song’ discusses themes that are pretty similar to those discussed on SOUR. Olivia delivers another beautiful vocal performance and truly makes us excited for any potential future musical endeavours Olivia may take on. This song is criminally underrated and deserves to be on every Olivia Rodrigo playlist!
‘1 step forward, 3 steps back’
Here, Olivia again combines more minimal instrumentation with perfect vocals to create an beautifully sad atmosphere in ’1 step forward, 3 steps back.’ Olivia has cited Taylor Swift as her biggest inspiration on numerous occasions and that is definitely evident in this song. Its highlighted most obviously in her use of the ’New Year’s Day’ chords at the beginning of the song, but even her lyrical decisions feel reminiscent of Taylor’s writing. This song feels very vulnerable, and really makes you feel like you’re the one thats gone through a breakup. So, if you’re a Swiftie looking for a new emotional pop ballad, this is definitely the Olivia Rodrigo song for you.
