The date was May 15th, 2022. People of all ages worldwide were huddled in front of their TVs, computers, and mobile devices with excitement. There was an air of anticipation and slight nervousness as we waited for a few magic words on a stage. What was going on? The Billboard Music Awards, of course!
The BBMAs are always fantastic, but we think this year’s ceremony gave us something especially memorable. From providing the ultimate style inspo to giving our favorite artists recognition for their work, there was something for everyone! Let’s take a look at the highlights of the night!
As usual, the BBMA red carpet was full of stunning looks from our favorite artists, influencers, and more! Let’s start by talking about music’s man of the hour, the incredible Jack Harlow. Jack recently dropped his new album, Come Home The Kids Miss You, and although we caught him at the Met Gala recently, we missed seeing Jack’s impeccable style on display. He wound up taking home his first-ever BBMA for Top Rap Song thanks to ‘INDUSTRY BABY’ with Lil Nas X! More on Jack later…
Another attendee who crushed the belted suit game was Liza Koshy, who upcycled the traditional suit silhouette into a fun two-piece that had everyone’s heads turning. We love that this look kept it classy while still being a little sassy!
Another trend we noticed on the red carpet was a lavender vibe, which makes sense since Pantone’s color of the year is a light purple. Stars like Anitta and Becky G absolutely rocked this shade, as shown in this adorable group photo with Chlöe Bailey. We gotta give props to Chlöe as well for her jaw-dropping cutout dress!
We also saw several stars leaning into a more punk-rock, edgy aesthetic, and we love that music’s pop-punk takeover has made its way into the fashion industry! Of course, the First Couple of pop-punk wowed us… thanks, MGK and Megan Fox! Teyana Taylor, Latto, and AleXa also gave us sleek looks that have lived in our minds rent-free since Sunday night. Excuse us while we raid our own closets looking for anything pleather, spiked, and corseted!
The Biggest Winners
It’s no surprise that our girl Olivia Rodrigo absolutely swept at this year’s ceremony. Despite not attending, Olivia won the awards for Top New Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Streaming Songs Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, and Top Billboard 200 Album for SOUR. We’re tired even just listing those out, we don’t know how she works so hard constantly.
There’s no denying that Glass Animals made history with ‘Heat Waves’ in the past year, when the song made the longest-ever journey to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. So they’ve more than earned the awards for Top Rock Song and Pepsi Mic Drop Moment, which specifically commemorated their 59-week rise to the top – and it was their first time winning a BBMA. Us when we realize we haven’t listened to GA in a while: “sometimes, all I think about is you…”
Kali Uchis crushed it in the Latin categories this year, as she should! Clad in a fiery red dress almost as hot as the music she’s been releasing, Kali took home the prizes for Top Female Latin Artist and Top Latin Song for ‘telepatía,’ which was definitely one of our favorite songs on her Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) ∞ album. We’re glad she’s getting the recognition she deserves, especially after diving into her roots with her Spanish releases.
While we’re still kinda sad our queen Taylor Swift didn’t make a surprise appearance, we’re still beyond proud of her for winning four awards this year: Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Country Artist, Top Country Female Artist, and Top Country Album for Red (Taylor’s Version) – an award she also won for the original Red album in 2013. Pretty legendary, if you ask us!
The show kicked off with an awe-inspiring performance by the host, Diddy, and it unfolded into a surprise set by Jack Harlow! See, told you we’d come back to him. Jack brought the energy with his latest hit, ‘First Class,’ which just returned to its #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. Deserved!
Megan Thee Stallion gave us some real hot girl sh*t while proving there’s no ‘Plan B’ for her – her only option is to keep paving her way as a rap superstar! She wowed us with her energetic performance and we love that she gave us a little slice of ‘Sweetest Pie’ as well. Not to mention that gorgeous outfit that complimented her figure and sultry sophistication.
Our list of favorite performances wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Machine Gun Kelly’s intimate take on ‘twin flame.’ The song details his love story with Megan Fox in such a sweet, vulnerable way, and we love that he opened up to the world like this.
The Interactions Between Our Faves
One of the best parts of award shows is seeing artists casually hang out as if they aren’t making us freak out whenever a new picture gets released. And may we just say… this year’s BBMAs may have been the most ambitious crossover event in history. Between Janet Jackson presenting Mary J. Blige with the Icon Award, Doja Cat posing with Fat Joe and DJ Khaled in a photo taken by Cara Delevigne, and Megan Thee Stallion meeting up with Florence + The Machine backstage, we were on the edge of our seat!
