John Legend‘s new single, ‘Honey,’ featuring Muni Long, is the love song of summer we didn’t know we needed. After John Legend and J.I.D. shared their R&B-infused gem, ‘Dope,’ last month, we didn’t think things could get any sweeter, but never say never. Produced by Ryan Tedder, Steven Franks, Lindgren, Tommy Brown, and HARV, this sultry duet turns up the intensity. Here are five reasons why we’ve given ‘Honey’ a permanent home in our hearts and on our playlists.
The Heavenly Hooks
From ‘All Of Me,’ to ‘Love Me Now,’ John Legend’s music is overflowing with catchy choruses we can’t get out of our heads. With its bouncy melody and dreamy lyrics like “You’re sweeter than honey / Worth more than money / Easy like Sunday,” ‘Honey’ doesn’t disappoint. While the writing in his songs is already delicious, the passion he pours into every word is what keeps us hooked.
The Legend-ary Collab
It’s no secret that John Legend’s discography contains some of the most buzzworthy collaborations. From his heartwarming track, ‘Lay Me Down,’ with Sam Smith, to his seductive number, ‘Tonight (Best You Ever Have Had),’ featuring Ludacris, it’s impossible to pick our favorite. While Muni Long and John Legend previously worked together as songwriters, ‘Honey’ is their first collaboration as recording artists, and we here at THP love the result.
The Loving Lyrics
Muni Long and John Legend share what it’s like to be addictively in love with sensual lyrics like “Show me the ways to explore / Every day wanting more.” But nothing could make this track sweeter than knowing who John Legend was singing it for, and his acoustic recording of ‘Honey’ for Chrissy Teigan is downright adorable.
The Summer Vibes
Aside from being John Legend’s steamiest single yet, there’s something about this track that just screams summertime. Whether it’s the 70s soul elements or jazzy saxophone layers, we know we’ll be listening to ‘Honey’ while driving to the beach with the windows down all summer long.
The Forthcoming Album
Our jaw dropped to the floor when we heard John Legend’s eighth studio album was on its way. The album’s official release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, but if bangers like ‘Honey’ and ‘Dope’ are any indication of what to expect, we’re sure it’ll be worth the wait.
