You, yes, you, saddle up to The Broadway Theatre’s nearby bar as Weezer acts as your bartender for a five-night stint (metaphorically, of course, unless Rivers Cuomo decides he’s a little famished after twiddling his fingers on a guitar). Starting September 13 to 18, their SZNZ project will be echoing around the establishment, dedicating each night to a particular season, with the fifth being a jumbled-up tribute to all. And not to fear, those deep in their discography classics will be sprinkled in as well, including a teen drama soundtrack favorite, ‘Island In The Sun!’ In order to not wait for the weather man to let us know a particular season has hit, we’ve decided to compile a list of refreshing drinks for all your pre-show needs!
‘Lawn Chair’ and Summer’s Zen
Weezer fans, pin your GPS coordinates to the nearest beach as you enjoy Bon Appétit’s Citrus Slushy!
- 4 large navel oranges, plus wedges for serving
- 2 large lemons, plus wedges for serving
- 3 Tbsp. pure maple syrup
- 1 tsp. cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp. Diamond Crystal or ½ tsp. Morton kosher salt
First, you’re going to clean up the oranges and lemons until there’s no trace of zest or seeds, slicing them into thick circles to freeze for no less than two and no more than 12 hours. Mix them up with maple syrup, cayenne, salt, 10 ice cubes, and ½ cup of water in a blender, and wallah!
‘The Garden of Eden’ Blooms in Spring
Central Park, which is just three miles from the Weezer residency, works as the perfect scenery backdrop for Barbara Cooks’s Kiwi Cucumber Agua Fresca.
- 6 kiwis, peeled
- 1 large cucumber, peeled and seeded
- 4 packets of Splenda (or other no-calorie sweeteners)
- 6 cups water, divided
- Extra kiwi slices for garnish
We’re going to puree the ingredients by placing them in a blender, keeping in mind only two cups of water are needed here before stirring the final two with everything else in a pitcher afterward.
‘Grapes of Wrath’ in Autumn
Technically, the residency takes place in the summer, but it’s only a few days away from nearing fall, so The Spruce Eats’s Classic Hot Buttered Rum is the perfect thing to warm you up before the show!
- 2 teaspoons packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
- 1 splash of pure vanilla extract
- 1 dash of ground cinnamon
- 1 dash ground nutmeg
- 1 dash ground allspice
- 2 ounces dark rum
- 4 ounces of hot water
- Cinnamon stick, for garnish
Minus the rum and hot water, we’re going to muddle up the ingredients together in an Irish coffee glass and then pour the missing two on top, with the rum going in first!
‘California Snow’ Drizzles in Winter
Surely, there’s gotta be various sad ballads in Weezer’s winter EP, but thankfully the person beside us won’t have to lend us their shoulder since Sophie Bourdon’s Red Velvet Hot Chocolate can make us just a little bit happier!
- 2 cups plant-based milk (almond, cashew, oat, and coconut are all good options)
- 1/2 medium beet (cooked and grated (about 1/4 cup packed)
- 3 tbsp raw cacao powder
- 3-6 soft dates (depending on their size and desired sweetness), pitted and roughly chopped
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- Small pinch of fine-grain sea salt
Blend the ingredients together until it’s a high ten on your sweetness scale, making sure beets are well mixed, and then we’re going to get a little hotter in the kitchen. Warm the mixture by using a saucepan and whisking over low-medium heat. Remove once the temp is just right to serve in mugs! Cozy!
Remember, there’s no judgment if you’re scurrying off to your kitchen to make one of these drinks before it’s necessarily time! If you do, however, have the strength to wait, tickets for Weezer’s residency are on the Telecharge website, and the shows follow the order of spring, summer, autumn, and winter (you know, in case you have a particular season you’re swaying towards!)
