Here at THP, we can’t help but feel giddy with all the new music dropping this summer. And one of our fav indie-pop queens, Alice Merton, is back with fresh music that we’ll be jamming to all summer long!
Merton’s latest work of art, S.I.D.E.S., allows the artist to showcase her different sides (see what we did there). The ‘No Roots’ singer gets vulnerable throughout the album as she explores issues like personal and professional conflict, self-doubt, and standing up for what you believe in.
“The last two years have been challenging for everyone in some way or another. Friends and family were lost, lockdowns were enforced, and our mental strength had been tested to its limit. S.I.D.E.S. tells the story of what I experienced during this time.”
Merton on her inspiration behind her new album
Here are our favorite tracks to celebrate Alice Merton’s new album S.I.D.E.S.
The first track on our list opens the album with a booming retro sound. ‘Loveback’ starts with a mellow piano melody before packing a punch with electric guitars and drums. The track is about searching and “running” for the pure love we feel when starting a relationship. Merton’s lyrics flow with the album’s message of standing up for what you believe in. And with this song, it’s all about standing up for the love you deserve.
This next track is one of our favorites off S.I.D.E.S., and you best believe we’ve had it on repeat since. ‘Same Team’ is an honest track from Merton stemming from her experiences in personal and professional conflicts. The lyrics are about team conflicts and having conversations to solve the problem, hoping to become stronger as a team. Sonically, ‘Same Team’ is an alt-pop track with catchy melodies.
‘Blindside’ is a vulnerable track hidden within the bouncy pop-inspired track. This track is filled with energetic drumbeats, piano melodies, and light harmonies. But lyrically, it’s one of Alice Merton’s most personal songs from the album. The seventh track of S.I.D.E.S. shares the story of when the indie-pop singer felt inferior and trapped by someone she spent a lot of time working with. While the song explores the serious topic, the uplifting musical tones make listeners feel hopeful about pulling themselves away from a similar situation.
The last song on our list is ‘Mania.’ This track should be on everyone’s playlist because it is absolutely everything! The track feels a little haunting—in a good way—with booming drums and vocals. The track talks about embracing the wild things in life and pursuing the adrenaline rush of living to the fullest. ‘Mania’ also talks about letting go of any worries or self-doubt held within us and never looking back.
