Atari, one of the most notable names in gaming, turned fifty this past month. To celebrate their special anniversary, the company has teased new titles, merchandise, and re-releases of classic favorites, among other surprises. Atari Mania is one of these new titles, a mashup of iconic Atari titles with a modern twist! However, before you pick up the game this summer, you should do your homework. Luckily, we’ve made it easy! Check out our top five picks for Atari games you should know to celebrate their fiftieth anniversary!
Space Invaders

Space Invaders is a must-know for any player. It became an instant classic upon its 1978 release and has been reimagined many times over. This emoji 👾? You guessed it — based off of the iconic endless waves of Space Invaders aliens. Whether or not you plan on picking up Atari Mania, this is still a title you should know!
Frogger

Frogger has inspired a countless number of remakes throughout the years. Ever played the mobile game Crossy Road? If so, you’d be a Frogger master! The simple concept of crossing a dangerous path to safety makes for addicting gameplay that will last hours if you’re not careful.
Night Driver

Night Driver is the Grand Theft Auto franchise’s cool older sibling, providing the blueprint for the genre of driving games for years to come. The concept is similar to that of Space Invaders, simply avoiding obstacles as you drive along, but can make you feel like a professional race car driver. This is one of the more underrated Atari games, but still a good one to have on your roster.
Pac-Man

Pac-Man is a title that almost everyone is sure to know, but not because of its connection to Atari! Most commonly known as a pay-to-play arcade game, Pac-Man and its sequel, Ms. Pac-Man, were both converted into Atari titles to bring the arcade magic home.
Donkey Kong

Most commonly known for his appearances in Nintendo games, Donkey Kong is an Atari classic, too! Several iterations of his games were made for various Atari systems, and expanded the audience beyond just Nintendo players. If it weren’t for Atari, who knows where we would be?
These are our five favorite Atari games, but there are hundreds more that are just as iconic! Have any special memories with the Atari system? Let us know in the comments, or hit us up on Twitter @thehoneypop!
