Rina Sawayama Soars “High Above The Clouds” With New Single, ‘Catch Me In the Air’

Now, while we know that it’s only been a month since the release of ‘This Hell,’ we at THP have been seriously craving some more new music from the queen of the alternative genre, Rina Sawayama. So, when we saw that she had released ‘Catch Me In The Air,’ we simply couldn’t help but add it to all of our personal playlists.

‘Catch Me In The Air’ comes as the second release from Rina’s upcoming album Hold The Girl, following on from and greatly contrasting the country-inspired banger that was ‘This Hell.’ Combining a softer instrumentation style with more personal lyrics, Rina creates a super lighthearted and fun atmosphere that makes us feel like we’re the main characters in a coming-of-age movie. When writing the song, Rina described how she wanted it to sound like the Irish coastline, and we at THP think she captured this perfectly, making it the perfect song for the upcoming Summer season.

Largely discussing themes of family, Rina has dedicated this new single to her own mother. Raised by a single parent, Rina describes how she wanted to write about the kind of relationship children and single parents have, comparing it to the idea of catching one another in the air.

Although we are head-over-heels in love with the two currently released singles, we are also extremely excited to hear the full-length album. Set to be released on September 2nd, Hold The Girl is Rina’s sophomore album and, based on how phenomenal her first album SAWAYAMA was, we already know it’s going to be great. In her recent Zane Lowe interview, Rina discussed the meanings of the album title, stating:

Hold the Girl to me is two meanings. It’s about what holds me back as an adult, and it’s also about holding the inner child, as the child within.

This year has already been a hugely successful year for Rina. As well as gearing up to release Hold The Girl, Rina has also featured on Charli XCX’s single, ‘Beg for You.’ Rina describes Charli as “inspiring” and we seriously hope that the two collaborate again in the future as the world simply hasn’t seen enough of this iconic duo. Rina is also playing a series of tour dates this year that you are not going to want to miss out on. See if she is coming to a city near you!
