We don’t know about you, but here at The Honey POP we think it’s never too early to start celebrating spooky season! With beautiful illustrations, exciting magical powers, and intriguing characters, Coven is the perfect graphic novel for those who love a good witch story.
Summary: Emsy has always lived in sunny California, and she’d much rather spend her days surfing with her friends or hanging out with her girlfriend than honing her powers as a fire elemental. But when members of her family’s coven back east are murdered under mysterious circumstances that can only be the result of powerful witchcraft, her family must suddenly return to dreary upstate New York. There, Emsy will have to master her neglected craft in order to find the killer . . . before her family becomes their next target.
Content Warnings: murder, grief, death of loved ones
Set in a small town that’s home to many witch families, Coven has the perfect setting for a classic witch story. With an old-fashioned family diner, a creepy mansion, and the fact that the town is surrounded by a forest, there was no shortage of small-town mystery vibes. The various kinds of magic, from elemental to spirit, played an essential role in the magic system and world-building. We also got a sense of the coven’s history and their role in the town’s past.
Something we loved most about Coven was the diverse group of characters! We enjoyed learning about each member of the coven and what role they played in the group. They were all intriguing in their own way. We especially liked our main character Emsy and her fire powers. Seeing how she changed as a person and grew into her own throughout the book was really rewarding. Our other favorite characters would have to be Ben and Ash. Seeing how different these three characters were, and how they learned from each other was a lot of fun. We’d love to be a part of this friend group!
Now we couldn’t review this book without mentioning the stunning artwork! Kit Seaton’s art style was a perfect match for this thrilling story. The facial expressions and character design fit seamlessly together, not to mention the backgrounds and forest scenes. Overall, Coven was a fun read, perfect for spooky season!
Coven by Jennifer Dugan and Kit Seaton is out September 6th and is available to pre-order here!
