Most recently, she released the titular track, dubbed a “multigenre-hybrid pop anthem.”
From the first three promotional singles to a brand new music video and an upcoming North American tour, things are very exciting in the word of Rina Sawayama fans at the moment. We’ve got all the info you need to know about everything Hold The Girl!
‘This Hell’ + ‘Catch Me In The Air’
First of all, both of these singles slap. We haven’t been able to stop singing ‘This Hell‘ since it came out.
Apparently, ‘This Hell’ is inspired by country-pop and infused with Rina’s unique flair, and we cannot get enough. We love the way the production makes us wanna dance and the lyrics are catchy yet clever.
Rina said, “The past couple of years I’ve been listening to lots of female country singers and wanted to write a euphoric and tongue-in-cheek country-pop song.”
“It’s an important song for me given the human rights that are being taken away from minorities at a rapid rate in the name of traditional religious beliefs, more specifically I was thinking about the rights being taken away from the LGBTQ community when I wrote this song. When the world tells us we don’t deserve love and protection, we have no choice but to give love and protection to each other. ‘This Hell’ is better with you,” she continued.
Our favorite ‘This Hell’ lyrics have to be: “Flame red carpet moment, posing for the paparazzi / F**k what they did to Britney, to Lady Di and Whitney.”
Meanwhile, ‘Catch Me In The Air‘ shifts gears into a little bit of pop-rock flavor. The song details Rina’s relationship with her single mom, and it’s joyful and tender and nostalgic.
Of Hold The Girl‘s second single, she said, “This song I wrote about my mum who’s a single mum, you know how intense that relationship is. They feel like your sister, a brother, or even your child sometimes. I felt throughout my life my mum and I have caught each other when we’re falling. That’s what the songs about.”
She also said that the first verse is from the parent’s point of view, while the second is from the child’s.
Our favorite ‘Catch Me In The Air’ lyrics are: “When you ran away where clouds kiss the mountain peaks / I was afraid but you left your wings on me.”
‘Hold The Girl’ Music Video
The ‘Hold The Girl’ music video is equal parts cinematic and chaotic as Rina tries to escape a house in the middle of nowhere, only to be flung back each time to the bed inside. The video encapsulates the energy of the ballad slash dance-pop track, and the struggle of self that the lyrics describe.
Rina wrote the song after an intense therapy session, and the video, directed by Ali Kurr, depicts a time loop set at a 19th century farmhouse, complete with period-specific costuming and a more modern dance sequence. The metaphorical journey is emotional to watch, as it’s something that so many young adults can relate to.
You guessed it, here’s out fave ‘Hold The Girl’ lyrics: “She is mе and I am her / So hold the girl.”

Hold The Girl The Album
Rina’s second official album is slated for release on September 16, and it’s safe to say we are vibrating with excitement.
Since SAWAYAMA was full of bangers that begged for an arena audience and a crowd singing along, we know that Rina’s next album is going to give us the same level of iconic.
Reportedly, Hold The Girl will “juxtapose intimate storytelling with arena-sized songs,” aka, it’s going to expand on Rina’s unmatchable energy and creative storytelling abilities. We love how much heart she puts into her music and it always sounds one-of-a-kind.
