If you think of versatility in hip hop, Wiz Khalifa might not initially ring a bell! At first, you probably think of hit slappers like ‘Black & Yellow’ or ‘We Dem Boyz.’ However, you should wait a minute & think again! Between slick pop sentimentality, smooth throwback rap cuts, & even emo/rap fusion, there’s more to Wiz than you expect.  With a decade of hits in the rearview, Wiz Khalifa expands your tunnel vision with his new album Multiverse!

A Peek Into The Multiverse

We at THP kept you in the loop with what Wiz has in store with this project. First, we bumped ‘Iced Out Necklace,’ with its brashness & thumping trap beat! Next came the Cali-inflected bounce of ‘Bad Ass B*tches,’ dripping with Euphoria energy as we described. Lastly, Wiz slowed it down with the breeziness of ‘Memory Lane.’ Although these singles are firmly rap, they give a small peek into Wiz’s multiverse of styles on this album!

Deep Cuts In The Multiverse

What takes us by surprise is the genre-bending in this project! Possibly inspired by Childish Gambino & Tyler the Creator, Wiz fuses rap with 70s/80s r&b and pop for a groovy sound.

An early highlight is ‘MVP,’ with its G-Funk vibe & singsong flows! This track is definitely closer to classic Wiz, but with a more organic feel.

‘Something Real’ might be Wiz’s deepest venture into pop balladry, delivering a track fit for a 1980s John Hughes film. If you liked his track ‘See You Again,’ you’re in for a treat with this one!

‘We Don’t Go Out to Nightclubs Anymore/Candlelight Girl’ echoes the quiet storm romanticism of New Edition & Luther Vandross. Remembering the comparison made to Gambino & Tyler for their genre-bending, this track strongly comes to mind!

Towards the back half, ‘Mirror Love (Love 2)’ continues the 1980s vibe reminiscent of Phil Collins & Prince, complete with an electric guitar solo! Khalifa is in his slow dancing bag with this heater!

Multiverse Brings Everything Full Circle For Wiz Khalifa

Given his status as a hitmaker in rap for the last decade, we would’ve been okay with Wiz staying in his lane. Nevertheless, we gotta commend him for stepping out of his comfort zone at this point in his career!
