NIKI has blessed our eyes and ears repeatedly this year and, if you’re anything like us, then you were only just starting to recover from the beauty that is ‘Oceans & Engines.’ However, NIKI clearly had other plans for us, truly keeping us on our toes with the release of another flawless single, ‘High School in Jakarta.’ This comes as the third single from her upcoming album, Nicole, and we really aren’t going to be able to take it off of repeat.
‘High School in Jakarta’ is a nostalgic and mellow pop song that chronicles NIKI’s personal experiences of first love as a high school teenager. Lyrically, this song is another great example of NIKI’s ability to tell a captivating story through her words. For instance, NIKI is able to perfectly capture the feeling of being a teenager with lyrics like “I lie and tell you I’ll be gettin’ drunk at Rachel’s / I wasn’t, she doesn’t even drink” and “High school in Jakarta, sort modern Sparta.”
Lyrics are, perhaps, one of NIKI’s greatest strengths as a musician, highlighted best in songs like ‘Split,’ discussing more personal themes like identity and place. Honestly, we would read NIKI’s grocery lists if she let us.
‘High School in Jakarta’ and its accompanying video are the third installments in the love story that NIKI has been documenting throughout her newest singles. This story started with the single ‘Before‘ and continued on with ‘Oceans & Engines.’ Serving as a prequel, the ‘High School in Jakarta’ video shows how NIKI met her ex-boyfriend in a drama club and also shows how they came up with their handshake that features throughout the three music videos. All of the videos feature Adrian Sudaroso in the role of NIKI’s boyfriend and, while we are definitely team NIKI, he does a great job throughout.
In the past, NIKI has cited Taylor Swift as one of her biggest inspirations and, in a Taylor-like fashion, NIKI recently announced that the three videos were originally shot as a short film titled But I’m Letting Go. She will be releasing this short film into the world shortly after the release of her album and we are certain that its going to be a tear-jerker.
All three of these singles will feature on NIKI’s upcoming sophomore album, Nicole. Set to be released on August 12th, we can already tell this album is going to be one of our favorites of the year. While we haven’t even listened to it yet, we already know that the twelve tracks will leave us wanting even more of NIKI’s spectacular vocals and lyrics. We can’t wait!
As well as releasing this single, NIKI has also recently announced her own headline North American tour!
