Do you have any fun traditions for watching iconic award shows like MTV’s Video Music Awards? For the team at THP, one of our favorites is playing armchair fashion police every time another star shows up! This year brought some of our favorite looks yet, and while we could talk about 2022’s black carpet all day, we’ll spare you and just share 14 of our faves. Still a lot, but it was, like, really hard to narrow these down.
Both of Anitta’s looks for the night – her black carpet look and her performance bodysuit – were red hot, but we’re still not over the unique dress she wore on the carpet before the show started. From the plunging corset to that interesting halter piece, this was one of the standout looks of the night!
These BLACKPINK outfits are going straight to our dome faster than ‘Pink Venom!’ Lisa, Jisoo, Jennie, and Rosé each wore a fairly different black look, but they came together in such a stunning way and each outfit matched their personalities.
There’s never an award show where Chlöe doesn’t shine, so we were stoked to see her literally shining with this silver dress from Zigman! The fitted bodice against the draped waist was gorgeous and the fact that she matched the Moonperson trophies was a fun plus.
Can you believe this was only Conan’s first VMAs appearance and he blew our minds this much?? Our jaws were dropping when he walked out with this Harris Reed look, finished off with platform boots by Marc Jacobs. The contrast between the airy white lace and the powerful black pants was so interesting!
She can be a better boyfriend than him, and she can dress better than him! Of course, we’re talking about Dove Cameron, who took home the award for Best New Artist. We’ve known Dove is a style icon for years, but this might just be one of our favorite looks she’s ever worn.
We don’t know how Jack was tolerating the New Jersey heat in this look, but we applaud him for it! His leather suit came from Hermes, but it seemed like it came from heaven based on how well it suited him. An honorable mention goes out to the light turquoise look he wore in the audience later in the night.
You can always count on Latto to bring some ‘Big Energy’ to an award show, but this time, she also brought the perfect accessory to make us all hungry. She teamed up with Burger King and the amazing Laurel Dewitt – who’s designed for stars like Lady Gaga, Megan Thee Stallion, and Beyoncé – to make a one-of-a-kind bedazzled crown with her 777 album title on the front! After the VMAs, the crown will be raffled off on the NTWRK app to raise money for Save The Music and help schools fund music programs.
Lil Nas X
We’ve nicknamed this Lil Nas X look the Circle Of Life, because the circle of feathers and the round skirt are giving us life. He always knows exactly how to make a statement at an event or award show! We’re witnessing fashion history in the making, besties.
“It’s bad b*tch o’clock,” and Lizzo didn’t even think of hitting snooze! This voluminous gown could’ve easily looked boring on the wrong person, but it looked so luxurious and rich on Lizzo. We’re getting some chic Ursula vibes and we’re not complaining!
Our girl Nicki was one of the most celebrated artists of the night and took home the legendary Video Vanguard Award, so naturally, she needed an iconic look to match. She delivered all the Barbie vibes of our dreams and performed a mashup of her biggest hits in a Barbie Dreamhouse-inspired set. What more could we want?
Sabrina brought us some retro realness with this adorable dress from Moschino, and we’re absolutely in love! The headband was such a nice addition and the colors are fun without being too overwhelming.
Sofia, our bestie! We can say from experience that she’s like an angel brought to this Earth, and her VMAs outfit proves us right. She looked absolutely beautiful in this hooded dress by Carolina Herrera – this design looks like it was simply made for her!
Tate was pulling double-duty at this year’s VMAs, showing up as both the superstar that she is and a black carpet correspondent! So of course, she dressed the part and looked absolutely incredible doing it. This silhouette was so fresh and the subdued teal is such a great color for her.
Miss Swift?! MISS SWIFT?! If you saw that sneaky post-and-delete from Oscar de la Renta offering a little peek at this look captioned with ‘mirrorball’ lyrics, you were probably half leaning into the clownery with us and half convinced there was no way Taylor would show up. But she did and she gave us what might just be her best awards show look to date! Then she announced a whole new album… this night was surreal.
