The name SWIMS stands for “Someone Who Isn’t Me” and has been the center of his career since the beginning. On his website bio Dimsdale thanks the team behind him and remarks that art is about staying true to your people that knew him “well before he became Teddy Swims.”
Teddy Swims began his career in his hometown of Atlanta in a variety of alternative rock bands. In early 2019, he collaborated with his friend Addy Maxwell, landing them a spot as an opener for Tyler Carter. Swims continued posting covers from his “homemade” bedroom studio on social media. This ultimately landed him a record deal with Warner Records.
While the world went silent, he turned to music.
Dimsdale’s debut single ‘Picky’ was released in 2020 which ultimately helped him gain traction on social media. Later, he produced a cover of Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On,’ donating all proceeds to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund as well. This just shows that he has stayed true to his roots by using his platform to educate and assist the community.
He was named “Artist You Need to Know” by Rolling Stone upon his Unlearning EP release in 2021, performed on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and supported Zac Brown Band the following summer.
The leading single from the EP is titled ‘Bed on Fire’ and was inspired by the pandemic and the time he had to reflect and unlearn some of his more negative mindsets.
In May of 2022, he posted this Journey cover of ‘Don’t Stop Believin’.’ The incredible rendition filled with his rich vocals currently sits at 2.6 million likes on TikTok and has taken Teddy Swims and his stardom to a whole new level.
He even had the opportunity to perform the cover on America’s Got Talent on August 24th with Kodi Lee and Neal Schon.
