Hold Us Because Rina Sawayama’s Sophomore Album Hold the Girl Is A Work Of Art

Rina Sawayama’s highly anticipated sophomore album Hold the Girl is finally here! And there’s no sign of the infamous “sophomore slump” in sight, because this album is pure poetry and modern pop infused with a slew of influences.

The Sound

With influences ranging from Irish band The Corrs to 2000s pop-country, this project is full of diverse sounds.

The track list is truly a journey that takes you through genre-bending sounds like a roller coaster of music. But even though the album has such an expanse of sound, it remains cohesive and encompasses the aesthetic that Rina has been teasing for months.

‘Hold the Girl,’ the titular track, is an indie dance-pop R&B wonderland, while banger ‘This Hell‘ was described by Rina as a “euphoric and tongue-in-cheek country-pop song” that she wrote after listening to female country.

Meanwhile, ‘Your Age’ brings electronic edge infused with 2000s pop-rock, and ‘Send My Love To John’ and ‘Phantom’ are two sides of the ballad coin with storytelling lyrics and sweeping musical landscapes.

Basically, Rina created a boundary-less, introspective adventure and tied it all together in one fire, poetic, theatric album.

The Highlights

Opener ‘Minor Feelings’ provides the “thesis” for the album, inspired by the book of the same name by Cathy Park Hong, that explores the Asian-American experience and marginalization.

Meanwhile, some of our fave tracks are perhaps the most fun––hyperpop-laced ‘Imagining’ and ‘Frankenstein,’ which pulse with infectious beats and suck the listener straight into the world of Hold the Girl.

Plus, we can’t forget the closer, ‘To Be Alive,’ which showcases the power of Rina’s vocals and serves as a triumphant jam to blast when you need a reminder of personal growth and life’s most joyful moments.
