Exclusive Interview: Ed Quinn Talks Movie & Music

Oh, you thought THP was just about the music? Well, if you’ve been around a while you should know that we bring you coverage on a wide variety of things, which is why we’re so excited to share this interview with you! We got the chance to talk to Ed Quinn, who you might recognize from his role as Hunter Franklin on The Oval.

If you don’t know who he is at all, let us give you a quick run down before diving into this interview. In addition to playing President Hunter Franklin, he’s also made appearances on shows like NCIS: New Orleans and One Day at a Time. He’ll also be in Kerry Washington’s upcoming movie SHADOW FORCE. But did you know that Ed Quinn also makes music? Pretty cool right? Check out what Ed had to say about his many projects below!

You’re continuing your role in The Oval, starring in an action-thriller movie, and releasing a full-length album. How do you keep it all balanced?
Working is a gift. There is NOTHING better than being busy. The only guarantee in this business is one day, things will go quiet… so when things are cranking, paddle FASTER and seize every opportunity [that] comes your way or you can create.

When it comes to acting, what genres are your favorite? What kind of stories do you like to tell?
I really just love doing anything that’s enjoyable. I’m having a blast on Shadow Force. I love the attention to detail and endless takes to “get it right” and “have options.” I miss multi-cam television. The pressure of performing live is the best. One Day at a Time and 2 Broke Girls were such a blast. But I can’t wait for my boss, Mr. Perry, to sound the alarm and rally the troops back to Atlanta for another season of The Oval. We shoot so quick, it’s an adrenaline rush, start to finish.

The Oval is in its 4th season. What has the journey of the show been like? How have you grown through your role as Hunter Franklin?
It’s been unlike anything I’ve ever done. Getting to be a small part of the EMPIRE that is Tyler Perry Studios fills me with pride. I’m so grateful I was able to lean on my decades of experience and really embrace and enjoy this experience.

How different is it to go from filming television episodes to filming a movie? Is there anything you do to help you switch mindsets and adapt to each role?
You just have to be aware of the current situation. Every once in a while, Tyler Perry will slow down to get a scene right if he’s not happy. You need to listen to notes. Every once in a while, Joe Carnahan will step on the gas pedal because there is a hurricane in the Caribbean and we’re about to get struck by lightning 😬. You need to be prepared and able to work fast. And sometimes a comedy scene isn’t working… While the writers are working on it and tinkering, you can’t take it personal. If you tighten up, it helps no one.

Do you see yourself as an actor, a musician, or both? Do you have a preference for one or the other?
It’s hard to say. I make a living as an actor, but I’ve been playing music decades longer. My range as both an actor and a musician are very, very narrow… 🕺🏻 but I’m okay at both most of the time. I think it’s a toss-up.

Can you give us any details about your upcoming album? What inspired the project?
Labor of love. Been playing guitar since I was 10 years old, singing since my band imploded in the ’90s, and I just wanted more autonomy over when and where I could play. Building a studio and recording an album with my good friend (and absolute freak of a musician) Adam Cameron were simply a great stroke of luck. Some of these songs are a few months old… some I’ve been working on for 30 years. Best part is, I have so much material banked we’ll start recording again the day the album drops. Nothing would make me happier [than] to release music constantly for my “10s of fans.”

What can fans expect to hear from your music? What do you want people to take away from it?
Look, all the stories are personal. These are moments that meant something to me, so I tried to capture them. BUT… I just hope people find them fun. I want there to be joy, even if some of the subject matter is dark. Big guitars, big guitar solos, big fun. But just know they’re very honest. I’m not trying to be clever or impress anyone.

What would you go back and tell your younger self, having reached the point you’ve made it to in your career?

“Hey dipsh*t, relax. It’s gonna be fine.”

You had a recording contract early on during your career. What made you dive into acting as opposed to being just a musician?
The entertainment business will kill all your dreams without a second thought… if you let it. I’m literally writing a script about the band years because it was such a spectacular disaster. But don’t get me wrong, acting has broken my heart more timed than I can count. If you want to last in this game, you gotta be able to take a punch, pivot, and learn to fight another day.

We love sharing new music with our readers. Who are some artists that you’ve really been enjoying lately?
New: Hardcastle. Kid is stupid talented. OG: Dave Meniketti from Y&T just survived a cancer scare. If you’ve never heard of them, or seen them live, go see how the Old School Bay Area Rawk Gods play. ‘Forever,’ ‘Hurricane,’ ‘Mean Streak’… no one today can touch the chops these guys have.

What can we expect from Ed Quinn for the rest of 2022?
First single and video ‘FREAK SHOW COLD’ [dropped] Oct 7th. Single ‘ROUTINE’ and video drops Nov 7th. Album December 7th. Season 4 of the Oval October 11th, and if Kerry Washington doesn’t fire me, lots of BTS from SHADOW FORCE 🙏🏼

We absolutely loved getting the chance to talk with Ed Quinn! If you’ve ever thought about acting or singing and can’t pick, let Ed be the example of “you can have it all!” Are you excited for the new season of The Oval? What about Ed’s other upcoming projects?
