We’re only less than a day away from Selena Gomez’s documentary premiere, and we can hardly contain ourselves! Following the release of her newest single, Selena sat down with Apple Music 1 to discuss what went into creating ‘My Mind & Me’ and the inspiration behind it.
Selena shares with Zane Lowe the importance of her newest single, what it means to her, and how it’s helped in her healing process. She talks about navigating the battles of struggling with mental health, how opening up was difficult amidst filming her documentary, and what she hopes the main takeaways from the film will be. She also discusses the importance of her newest single and what it meant to her to release it.
In my music, I get to really say what I feel. And I think that’s why this song means so much to me, and in a different way than any of my other songs only because I’ve attached this to my mental health and I’m addressing what it is. I mean, it’s completely cathartic for me and I think it goes so well with the documentary.

Not to mention that she let slip she’s got at least 12 new songs stored away in a vault that, at this moment in time, she doesn’t yet feel confident enough to release. Selena is candid on where she’s at with writing songs, plans to release any music, and over all the challenges of songwriting and experimentation. “I’ve definitely written and have at least 12 songs that I do love, but I don’t know if I just don’t feel confident with it yet for some reason. And I want to continue to keep getting better so that I don’t, obviously, don’t want to go back.”
She tells Zane Lowe that she’s “no longer in sad girl world” and that she’s trying a different lane of music to experiment in. (So don’t be surprised if Selena’s next album is full of pop hits that you can dance to. We know you’ve all been waiting for it.)
After revealing that the documentary was six years in the making, Selena also shares that she’s “terrified” and “has tried to back out of this three times.” She notes that it’s difficult for her to watch but that there is no other way she could have told the story. “The person I was in 2016 is obviously completely different than the person I am,” she tells Apple Music 1, “and it makes me sad to see where I was then.”
As she continues to open up about her mental health, struggling with a diagnosis, and how fame has impacted her life today, she notes that she understands her strength is inspiring to those that look up to her.
And while we have to admit that ‘My Mind & Me’ is easily one of Selena’s most vulnerable songs, we want to take a moment to appreciate the other works of art she’s blessed us with.
‘The Way I Loved You’
The lyric that crushed us: ” Like a first love / My one and only true love / Wasn’t it written all over my face / I loved you like you loved me / Like something pure and holy / Like something that can never be replaced”
Long are the days of Selena Gomez & The Scene, and while we’re gutted that their time together was cut short, we have to admit that Kiss & Tell was iconic. From ‘The Way I Loved You’ to ‘Naturally’ and ‘Tell Me Something I Don’t Know,’ this album absolutely slayed.
‘Let Somebody Go’ (feat. Coldplay)
The lyric that crushed us: “When I called the mathematicians and I asked them to explain / They said, ‘Love is only equal to the pain'”
The collab that we didn’t even know we needed, but we just couldn’t get enough of it afterward! With a music video as beautifully crafted as this one, it’s hard not for this to be one of our favorites.
‘Love Will Remember’
The lyric that crushed us: “Break down the walls, let heaven in / Somewhere in forever, we’ll dance again”
Easily one of the best songs on Stars Dance. We don’t even know where to begin with this one. The lyrics bring listeners along for a wild ride as Selena opens up about loving someone who has left her and how, even when she tries to forget about them, the love she holds won’t allow her to.
The lyric that crushed us: “This is going to take a long time / And I wonder what’s mine / Can’t take no more”
We adored the work that Selena did behind the scenes of 13 Reasons Why, but this song was probably the most special thing to come from her. Along with matching semi-colon tattoos, Selena got with the cast. And no, we’re still not over it.
‘Lose You To Love Me’
The lyric that crushed us: ” I gave my all and they all know it / Then you tore me down and now it’s showing / In two months, you replaced us / Like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it / In the thick of healing”
With the black and white music video to boot, Selena absolutely destroyed us all when she released ‘Lose You To Love Me.’ Safe to say, it was on repeat for hours with a box of tissues beside our beds.
Don’t forget to listen to Selena’s newest single, ‘My Mind & Me,’ and be on the lookout for the premiere of her documentary, airing on Apple TV+ tomorrow, as well as in select theaters.
