These Christmas Movies Are Classics For A Reason

It’s the happiest time of the year, a time for us to curl up on the couch and watch all of these classic Christmas movies. We can’t even properly encapsulate the warm, childlike feeling we get when watching these movies. We’ve compiled a list of the Christmas movies that have been filling us with so much Holiday joy for years so you can experience them too.

A Nightmare Before Christmas

Come on, what better way to start this list than with A Nightmare Before Christmas! Jack Skellington is a full-on fixture in pop culture from approximately September to January; you can’t go into any store without seeing shirts, mugs, or at least some sort of item depicting one of the character’s faces. We feel like no matter what, A Nightmare Before Christmas will always be present this time of year.

Elf

Will Ferrall is a national treasure. Truly, anytime the Holidays roll around, nothing puts us in the spirit quite like watching Buddy the elf navigate life in New York City. From all the iconic lines to the ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ duet with Zooey Deschanel, Elf is just a top-tier film. This is one of those classic Christmas movies that we hope they never touch and let just be a perfect standalone movie.

The Santa Clause

Now, we aren’t talking sequels here (although the second and third movies are fantastic, come on, Martin Short as Jack Frost?! unreal), so this gush fest will be about the original film, The Santa Clause. When we think back on movies that portrayed Santa as the main character, one St. Nick clearly stands out in our minds, Tim Allen’s portrayal as Scott Calvin. To us growing up, Tim Allen was Santa Clause, and we are beyond stoked that kids now get to experience the magic he brings as Santa Claus in the new Disney+ show, The Santa Clauses.

Miracle on 34th Street

If we’re talking classic Christmas movies, there was no way we would get away with not including the classic Christmas movie Miracle on 34th Street. Maybe more so than any other movie on this list, Miracle on 34th Street encapsulates the magic that is believing in Santa Claus and the magic that surrounds this time of year in general. This movie has so much heart, always makes us cry, and always leaves us with the warmest feeling.

Also acts as the ultimate ad for Macy’s.

Home Alone

Home Alone is every child’s dream scenario, left without adult supervision, to do and eat whatever you want; how does it get better than that? But what’s always captivated us about Home Alone is that, in the end, it truly is a movie about the importance of family, especially around this time of the year. We don’t go a year without seeing Macaulay Culkin on our screens.

The Holiday

The Holiday is the perfect rom-com while also being the perfect holiday movie; how often does that happen? (Successfully, maybe only one other time, with Love Actually.) The movie’s cast is spectacular; from Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet to Jack Black and Jude Law, they couldn’t have cast this feel-good film any better. The Holiday is one of those movies that is best watched while drinking a holiday wine or a hot chocolate, preferably with a fire nearby. You just can’t help but be put into a warm state of mind watching this story unfold.

A Christmas Story

A Christmas Story and Christmas go hand-in-hand at this point. We highly doubt there are many families, especially in America, that aren’t watching A Christmas Story. This movie is one we grew up our whole lives with, it’s just always been a pillar. And as far as famous props go, we have to admit it doesn’t get much more recognizable than the leg lamp.

If you haven’t already seen it, there is a incredible sequel, A Christmas Story Christmas, streaming on HBO Max that came out this year!

Mickey’s Christmas Carol

There are a solid million versions of A Christmas Carol, so narrowing it down and picking our favorite was quite the task. We settled on Mickey’s Christmas Carol. There is something so comforting about seeing these classic Disney characters bring a Christmas classic to life. We are actually watching this movie as we write this, and couldn’t be in a better mood.

Christmas With The Kranks

If you haven’t done yourself the favor of watching one of the best Christmas comedies of all time, Christmas With The Kranks, then you need to go watch it immediately. Like we said previously, Tim Allen is a Christmas pillar, so getting to see him in another Christmas movie just warms our hearts, and when you add Jamie Lee Curtis into the mix? You have a recipe for an all-timer.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas

We are ending this list with the best, Jim Carrey’s version of one of the best Christmas tales. From the incredible one-liners to the world of Whoville that we were able to be transported to, it just doesn’t get better than How The Grinch Stole Christmas. We watch this movie all year round if we’re being honest. The Grinch is just one of those characters that are all too relatable; we can never get enough of the montage of him getting ready to go out. That is us every day.
