Summer may officially be coming to an end, but the party doesn’t have to stop. Are you looking for a new study playlist or songs to listen to on your drive to work? Look no further than these 5 songs by SZA that fit your playlist needs.
‘Julia’
If you ask most people what their favorite SZA song is, not many would mention this hidden gem. That’s why we’re here to put you on to the good stuff! This classic, eighties-inspired song is from SZA’s 2014 EP, Z. The song is the soft rock banger of your dreams. Featuring groovy, techno sounds with layered background harmonies, ‘Julia’ is a certifiable classic.
In the song SZA laments, “You know I care for you, When hell over Earth came, I stood for you, will you stand for me?“. Sometimes all we want is to love and be loved in return. SZA’s dynamic, haunting vocals capture this sentiment perfectly. SZA, we’ll be sending you our therapy bill shortly.
’20-Something’
Adulting is hard. Trying to balance school, the work industry, friendships, and love is like trying to unlock the ultimate quest on a video game. It’s a lot. SZA captures this struggle perfectly in ’20-something,’ a song from her poignant debut album CTRL. One of the lines that stick with us the most is “Hoping my 20-somethings don’t end, hoping to keep the rest of my friends, praying my 20-somethings don’t kill me.“
These lines hold so much weight for the era we are currently in. Mental health struggles are at a high as young adults struggle with depression and anxiety. On one end, many of us are hopeful that our twenties will be filled with core memories, fun hangouts, and career advancements. We want to enjoy the time we have to be a “20-something” and don’t want it to end. But on the other end, we are struggling to grasp hold of any remaining relationships we have as it is hard to have time to make new ones. This on top of everything else can make our twenties a lonely, stressful time. SZA always finds a way to exactly what we’re thinking in such a nostalgic way.
‘Conceited’
Life can be rough. But sometimes you have to wipe your tears, look in the mirror, and say “I’m the baddest to ever walk the Earth.” You might not feel like it but trust us, you are. In the bop of the century, otherwise known as ‘Conceited,’ SZA delivers a full-on baddie anthem. The song is from her 2022 album SOS.
FYI, starting a song off by saying “I don’t like nobody, I don’t feel guilty about it” over a trap beat is the way to an introvert’s heart. We’re down to sit at home, watch K-dramas, and eat our favorite ice cream any day. But more importantly, SZA is letting her haters know she could care less about what they think. Life is short, so why spend time stressing over irrelevant people? You’re way too hot for that.
‘Snooze’
*taps mic* ‘Snooze’ deserved not only Best R&B Song but Record and Song of the Year at the 2022 GRAMMY’s. The day the GRAMMY Awards start basing awards on quality and talent is the day we will finally win.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
‘Saturn’
Earlier this year, SZA released the dreamiest single called ‘Saturn’. Have you ever read a book and wished it was possible to live in that world? Or gone stargazing and wished you could fly so you could be among the stars? Well, we certainly have and so has SZA. Maybe life exists outside of this world. One where intrusive thoughts don’t take over, and there is some semblance of peace.
Or perhaps, Saturn can exist right here on Earth. If we find what makes us happy and what calms our spirits, maybe we won’t have to just dream of Saturn anymore.
Until then, please excuse us while we go stargazing in the park.
