Happy New Year, book bees! We at THP are back with plenty of 2024 books you need on your TBR. And be sure to check out our favorite books from 2023 if you haven’t seen them yet!
We’re kicking off the new year with Sara Read’s new STEMinist novel, Principles of (E)motion! This book follows mathematician Dr. Margaret “Meg” Brightwood as she solves her life’s work. When she finally finishes the proof of a lifetime, she has to figure out who she is outside of work and studying.
Principles of (E)motion immediately stole our hearts. We especially love how the mathematical jargon was not too dense to understand. Here are three reasons to check out Principles of (E)motion by Sara Read!
Book Overview
Content Warnings: death of a grandparent, anxiety and panic attacks, mentions of murder and drug addiction
Summary: Mathematical genius Dr. Meg Brightwood has just completed her life’s work—a proof of a problem so impenetrable it’s nicknamed the Impossible Theorem.
Reclusive and burdened by anxiety, Meg has long since been dismissed by academia. Now everyone wants to get their hands on what she alone possesses—especially her own mathematician father.
Having grown up a prodigy in a field plagued by sexism and plagiarism, Meg opts for a public presentation so there will be no doubt of her authorship. But a panic attack obliterates her plans. In defeat, she goes home and locks away the one and only manuscript of her proof.
Then chance sends her the unlikeliest of Isaac Wells—carpenter, high school dropout, in trouble with the law. And the one love of Meg’s life. Fifteen years ago, they did little more than hold hands. Now, they find a tenuous space where they can love and be loved for who they are—not who the world expects them to be.
But when Meg goes to retrieve the Impossible Theorem, she finds it missing. Her fight for the achievement of the century will test the limits of her brilliance and the endurance of two vulnerable hearts.
The Protagonist
From the first page of Principles of (E)motion, we found it easy to root for Dr. Meg Brightwood. Not to expose ourselves, but we related to her strained relationship with her father, Dr. Henry Brightwood. He robbed Meg of a normal childhood because he knew she could surpass him. And because of that, she doesn’t know her identity outside of her work. We loved Meg’s journey to figuring out her future and couldn’t have asked for a better ending!
The Opposites-Attract Romance
We can’t remember when we last giggled this much from an adult romance. Sara Read knows what to write to make us swoon. Although Meg and Isaac’s lives took such different paths, the chemistry between these love interests was off the charts! We were almost too excited to read a romance between an isolated mathematical genius and a handyman on the run. While they have their respective trauma with love, their bond becomes so much stronger than that.
The Character Development
Principles of (E)motion does a fantastic job of weaving and developing so many deep issues in the plot. Although Meg has a therapist and takes medication for her anxiety and panic attacks, she still struggles with reminding herself to stay grounded and present. When she stops attaching her self-worth to her academic achievements, she starts to see how wide and fulfilling her life could be. And we’re so proud of her and Isaac for overcoming their mental and emotional walls!
Principles of (E)motion by Sara Read is out on January 9th, and you can preorder a copy of it here!
