Your favorite artists’ favorite artists are probably a co-writer on your favorite song. The best songs are usually never written by just one person. In fact, all our favorite artists are known to collaborate with one another in the studio all the time. That’s how the best songs are made, after all. Sometimes the credits are obvious, but other times we don’t see the credits upfront. One shining example of this is Leon Thomas. You probably know him from everyone’s favorite Nickelodeon show, Victorious, but did you know he makes his own solo music?!

‘MUTT’
Leon’s latest release had us up and dancing when we first heard it. ‘MUTT’ is about being that guy, and Leon Thomas is 100% that guy for us here in the hive. “But I’ll let my guard down for you / Said I’ll put my guard down for you / Said I’ll be vulnerable / So you can break my heart if you want to,” Leon sings. You can be strong and tough while also being emotional and vulnerable at the same time, which is what we love about the message of this song.
If you didn’t already recognize his name or ‘MUTT’ (firstly, what are you doing!?), then you need to know these five records with Leon’s writing credits.
‘Nasty’ By Ariana Grande
‘Nasty’ is arguably one of Ariana’s best songs in her discography, if you ask us. We were so happy to see that the two Victorious stars still link up to this day to make music! Ariana knows how to make a best-selling record on her own, but with Leon by her side, this duo is a musical powerhouse. We hope they find time to hit the studio again sometime soon. Maybe for AG8?

‘Yours Truly, Austin Post’ By Post Malone
We just know the vibes in the studio on this day were all the way up! The entire Stoney album has a special place in our hearts, and now there is even more of a reason to love it. Even though we know Post Malone’s next album is country-inspired, we’d love to see how Leon would approach the new work.

‘Love All’ By Drake
Usually when we think about Drake’s music, we really only think about rapping. But, without a doubt, we can clearly hear Leon’s R&B influence on ‘Love All.’ Lyrics like “I don’t want no friends no more, not many understand me / Everybody want something / You know the price of everything but the value of nothing” give off Leon’s energy perfectly. We know these two artists probably had great banter in the studio, and we wish we could have been a fly on the wall to see it go down!

‘Snooze’ By SZA
We fear this might be common knowledge, but if it’s not, well now you know. Leon Thomas helped SZA write her smash hit from the SOS album, ‘Snooze.’ We never hit snooze on this song, especially now that we know Leon had a helping hand in it. And thanks to this track, Leon now has a GRAMMY, and we couldn’t be more proud of him. We hope to see Leon back on the GRAMMY stage one day accepting an award for his solo music.

‘Not Another Love Song’ By Ella Mai
Ella Mai has one of those timeless voices that is hard to turn away from. We just know if Leon and Ella were to get on the track together vocally, it would break the pop music world right in half. ‘Not Another Love Song’ was made back in 2021, and when we listened to it back then, we had not idea Leon was in the writing room. But now, we can totally hear his influence on lyrics like “I’m finna take my time / My mind, my rules / This ain’t no crime / Makin’ love to you.”

We can’t believe we grew up with Leon as young honeybees, and now we are watching him collect the awards we knew he always would end up with! If you love these songs, or if you fell in love with ‘MUTT’ on the first listen like us, you can catch Leon Thomas live in a city near you this fall! He’ll be out on the road supporting BLXST – we are so excited to see the two of them in concert!
