We’re big fans of 2NE1 at THP! This formidable K-pop group first debuted with their hip-hop-inspired hit ‘Fire.’ Since then, they have sold over 66 million records, making them one of the top-selling K-pop groups of all time. There are many reasons to stan this iconic, all-girl quartet, so we’ve narrowed it down to just five.
Their ‘Girl Crush’ Concept
2NE1 pioneered the “girl crush” concept in K-pop. When they debuted in 2009, most girl groups presented a cutesy, palatable image that was easy for audiences to digest. 2NE1 challenged that standard with their debut single, ‘Fire.’ The “street” version of the music video highlighted the members in bold streetwear, creating an edgy, trendsetting vibe. This girl-crush approach centered on female empowerment, showing that idols could be both feminine and badass. Groups like MAMAMOO, ITZY, and BLACKPINK have embraced this bolder concept, uniquely building upon it.
Their Unique Qualities
2NE1 have been celebrated not only for their music, but also for the unique qualities each member brings to the group. CL is the charismatic, fierce leader, widely recognized for her powerful stage presence and impressive rap skills. Park Bom, the gentle yet soulful main vocalist, is also the group’s lovable jokester. Dara is famous for her bold fashion sense and energetic charm, acting as both a vocalist and rapper. Minzy, the youngest member, is admired for her incredible dancing abilities, which give her a commanding presence on stage.
Their Emotional Strength
2NE1 have faced many setbacks throughout their career. Minzy was only 15 when the group debuted, and she has openly acknowledged the mental struggles she faced as a teenager under the spotlight. CL’s solo efforts often stalled due to her label’s lack of promotion, and the company even called her “ugly” when critiquing her appearance. Park Bom had to take time away from 2NE1 due to problems surrounding her taking Adderall for her ADHD. The group’s unexpected disbandment also shook Dara to the core; she later shared that she developed insomnia and social phobia after the announcement. Despite everything, 2NE1 have pushed through their struggles, inspiring and delighting fans with their reunion.
Their Generosity
2NE1 are known not only for their powerhouse performances but also for their generosity. The group consistently uses its platform to support meaningful causes. In 2011, they donated ₩25 million from their Going Together concert in Hanoi to fund scholarships for Vietnamese students. They’ve also supported environmental causes, raising around ₩20 million through Tree Planet Korea’s “Star Forest Project” to help combat desertification and reduce food shortages in Africa by planting fruit trees.
Their Recent Reunion
2NE1 reunited in October 2024 and launched their Welcome Back Tour to celebrate their 15th anniversary. The tour featured a gorgeous medley of iconic singles, including ‘Fire,’ ‘I Don’t Care,’ ‘Ugly,’ and ‘I Am the Best,’ and concluded in April 2025. 2NE1 reunited for their fans, even making amends with YG Entertainment, the company widely criticized for mismanaging the group and contributing to their sudden disbandment. Their reunion highlighted the members’ strength and tenacity, especially Park Bom. Despite her struggles with lymphadenitis, Bom delivered powerful performances throughout the tour and only stepped back in August 2025 due to medical advice.
